I'm really not trying to be disrespectful to the American slaves, slavery was one of the worst things in human history.

But often I hear about picking cotton and how it's back breaking labor, but it doesn't seem like back breaking labor to me....

I'm sure things like chopping down trees with an axe or mining coal with a sledgehammer would be back breaking labor, but picking cotton just doesn't seem comparable.

Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something.

under the summer heat, in the south? strikes me as at least an "unpleasant" job.

This seems like a decent documentary of what it was like.

Strikes me as not all that much different than crypto-mining.

Bent over, lugging a heavy sack full of cotton...especially when "massa" is driving you to work faster and faster...and a bullwhip as incentive to comply.

It's not the job that's bad, but the conditions, the people you're doing it for and the hours they make you do it for, and the lack of pay sucks too, if you're a slave.

Easy experiment you can do at home. Line up five chairs. Put together a weighted messenger bag, like 40lbs. Actual bags can be up to ten feet long, get to 100lb dragged on the floor.
Then go to a chair, bend down and put your forearm on the chair. Stay there for a few min and move to next chair. Do this for forteen hours in a day, with only one ten minute break for lunch. Oh and paper cut your hand once in awhile since that kind of injury is common in cotton picking.

I think GizmoJ has finally found his calling: token black GOP candidate for competitive district where the braintrust has decided that they need "any black flesh human" to run.

Dude, you should ask that Santos guy how he was able to grab $70 million in like 3 months, and who you should call. This could really be your thing.

wait, are you repeating this question because it was something that you saw that "pretty lady" Candice Owens say? Seriously, you just need to keep saying things like that and they will literally dump bags of money on you.

Back in those days, those estates had plenty of acres. These in the modern day have long since been parceled up and subdivided.
Probably not every acre was cotton, but still, even half of that or a third is a lot of land to cover, especially before motorized machinery became part of farming.

I have said Gizmo is a bot/troll account. He said a few years ago that he was 19. That would mean he registered his account at age 8 or 9. Violation of forum rules.

What, you guys prefer more SaltyNuts threads?

Don't worry, you don't need to reply to that--everyone already knows the answer.

I'm 28 years old....I didn't say a "few years ago" I was 19, don't know where you got that from.
