too bad my old zalman only fits in 475 socket. 🙁 🙁

What kind of motherboard do you have? Go into the hardware monitoring section of it and see if it has a fan control option. It should where you can base a temperature that you want the fan to try and keep. I have a 550 p4 and I keep it set at about 58 degrees. But yes the fan on intels are very loud.

The Friendly Manual will tell you if there is a BIOS setting to control the fan based on CPU temp. You can also try to find it in the BIOS if you don't want to RTFM.

Err, there is no such thing as a pentium-D 640, there is a pentium-4 640, or a pentium-d 940 or 840, but no pentium-d 640. In either case, the stock heatsink and fan do tend to be pretty loud when running at full speed. You can't realy slow the fan down much or you'll likely start throttling, so the only real option would be to replace the heatsink/fan with something a little better.
