quick question, i need to build a sysytem for 3d rendering, needs a bit of poke and i'm going to go for a q9450 CPU. i would like to upgrade to penryn maybe middle of next year and i'm deciding between x48 and p45, will either one be compatible with penryn? i've read it doesn't use traditional chipset layouts but i'm not too up on mobo technology.

yes,

penryn is the mobile name for the processor.

Wolfdale is the dualcore

Yorkfield is the quad.

These are 45nm LGA775 Boards and will work in all P45 boards.

Do you mean Nehalem, the new desktop platform out at the end of the year? No, that needs x58.
