Is PCMCIA the same as Cardbus

I'm going to get a 54mbps wireless router and need a wireless adapter for my Toshiba laptop, the manual says I can get Type II or Type III PC cards.

I've noticed on newegg they have different kinds of cards including: 32-bit CardBus Type II, PC CardBus 32-bit compliant and PCMCIA. Which can I pick from, most on newegg are the cardbus type.

CardBus and PCMCIA are the same thing.

some pcmcia slots are also 16 bit but they tend to only come with older model laptops.

The laptop is only about a year old, its got a P4 1.6Ghz. So any will work as long as I get a version with a supported protocol type?

Yep, you'll be fine with any newer PCMCIA\Cardbus\PC card.

cardbus are better though since their 32bit and almost always use alot less cpu time

32 bit PCMCIA (Cardbus) started around the P133 age, though most didn't have it until the P166. By the P2 era, all of them had cardbus, even though some documentation may not mention it.

to know for sure. go to ur device manager, you should see a listing for PCMCIA socket, or PCMCIA slot
expand it, and if it doesn't say cardbus anywhere on there then ur 16bit, if it states cardbus, you have cardbus

btw, a cardbus card will not work in a laptop that does not support cardbus

To me they are the same. I have noticed them use those terms interchangeably quite a few times.

It says "toshiba ToPIC100 CardBus Controller" in my device manager. Thanks for they help guys, I'm gonna try to go with a Linksys card to go along with the router I'm getting.
