I've never used that laptop card thing before, so I'm not sure how this goes. Can I plug stuff into the PCMCIA slot while the computer is running, like USB, or do I need to shut the computer off, like PCI?

Yap, most PCMCIA once the drivers are installed are Plug & Play like USB.

Yes - by default PCMCIA devices are optimized for "quick removal."

My friend's PCMCIA Audigy Soundblaster 5.1 Digital card would lock up his windows if he pulled it out while the computer was on.
That's Creative for you.
