Just found OfficeMax has Free after rebate PC2100 256MB memory. Is PC2100 memory kind of out-of-date? Is it worthwhile to buy and keep a 256MB PC2100 for future DIY use at the risk of MIR? Thanks!

MIR?

Basically, if your mobo can take PC2700 then you should ignore PC2100. I personally don't know of a mobo that takes PC2100 and not PC2700, although there may be one...

And as far as cost goes, at crucial.com, 512 of PC2100 runs at $74 while 512 of PC2700 is a mere $6 more. PC2700 is definately better value/performance. In case you didn't know, PC2100 = 200mhz PC2700 = 266mhz

And free after rebate? OfficeMax will no doubt sell your email address/mailing address to make it worth their while.

I agree with Malladine, as far as you should get the faster PC2700 if the motherboard you have or plan to get supports it. But there still are several motherboards that still only support PC2100. I have a side business building computers/repair. Alot of my customers just want a computer for internet, word processing, younger kid's games and so forth. I generally use an integrated ASUS, Gigabyte or MSI motherboard for these types of computers. They only accept PC2100 and run great.

Should you get it and risk not receiving MIR? To me, that depends on your out of pocket expense. I just picked up a stick of 256mb PC2100 from Office Depot a few days ago. With the online coupon they had at the time, the memory was $30, out of pocket, then a $25 MIR, making it $5 in the end. My supplier presently is charging $34 for the same memory, plus shipping. This made the Office Depot deal good to begin with and a steal if the rebate comes in.

I've found revently that 2700 is cheaper at local shops then 2100. So even if you're only going to run the 2700 at 266 (not 333) then you may as well get it because it's "slightly" future proof and (in my recent experience) cheaper.
