Is PC Gaming Getting Worse or Stick With Console Gaming?!

Is PC Gaming Getting Worse or Stick With Console Gaming?!

I am really looking forward to Age of Conan for the PC... but I dunno if it will be worth it to buy a new computer just for one game. Any other good games for PC worth getting in the future?

Yeah, the wording of my OP is quite horrible... just really tried at work and I was wondering for FUTURE purposes...

would you buy a new computer for gaming or would you stick with a console since it is cheaper?

That depends entirely on what you have for your PC now, and what consoles you have now. PC gaming isn't getting "worse" per se so much as you don't have a fast enough PC to play the games you want to.

Just your personal preference if you want to spend money to upgrade/get a new PC, or just stick with consoles. I on the one hand have a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that can't run crap for games nowadays. I also have a 46" DLP that I play my 360 on. I haven't been a PC gamer in years.

Just whatever floats your boat...there's no right or wrong answer. You're going to spend money one way or the other to play games - just depends if you want to spend it on PC stuff or console/tv stuff.

Both?

If there are a bunch of console games you want to play, buy a console. Then if there are PC-exclusive games you want to play but your system can't handle, upgrade your PC.

There's no right answer to this. I will build or upgrade my PC for Spore, and I don't think PC gaming is bad at all. People have been predicting the death of PC gaming for years, and still good games come out year after year. But if you don't feel like you'll play many games, then... buy a console.

So, to sum up, assess your own interests, then decide for yourself what you want to do.

I just got a new computer for $800, mainly because I play FPS/RTS 90% of the time, or more, and am looking forward to games coming out this year and next. I like consoles but for me I can do a lot more with a computer.

I use to game on the PC alot mainly RTS, FPS and MMO's but over time all I played on a computer was a MMO because I kept finding games with cheaters in RTS and FPS. They would even have cheats that bypassed stuff like punkbuster.

Then I switched to consoles thinking they are consoles so it would be harder for people to cheat in those types of games and I was mistaken there too because not only the things that people do in games not considered cheats but they are called glitches but in my opinion it has gotten really bad in some games such as ranked matches of gears of war.

So I am thinking about switching back to computer gaming just for the sole reason of Age of Conan.

My question is are there any good games coming out for the PC that are not coming out for the console?

World of Warcraft, Supreme Commander, Command and Conquer are good examples of great stuff you can't get on the consoles... I still don't understand how people can FPS on a console... Blech!

However, if sports, fighting, and platformers are what you like, stick with the console!

Might be blasphemy, but I've waited to play the entire GTA series on the PC. Autoaim? Damn wusses... 😛

If you build your own system, and can put up with rebates, and maybe have a fry's nearby, you can make a nice economy gaming rig for about the price of a PS3.

I think the amount of quality games coming out each year has been decreasing. 4 or 5+ years ago, you used to be able to find a decent amount of quality games, but nowadays it only like 3 or 4 good quality games come out each year.

that in my opinion.

My only concern about PC gaming is that high end video cards are climbing in price.

For instance,
in the late 90s, a "top end" video card was well under $300 (IIRC, I paid $99 or $199 for my Canopus Pure3D)
Now, top end video cards run close to $600.

That said, It's true that you usually don't need anything even close to top end to play the games, but some of us (were stupid?) bought 1920x1200 resolution or higher displays, and we want to game at the native resolution.
Older games, such as World of Warcraft or Doom 3, or Half Life 2, or Far cry ... can play at those resolutions with maxed settings for $200 cards, however, newer games (Vanguard and Supreme Commander for example) often result in very poor performance at that resolution unless you have a very high end card, or if you scale all the quality settings down pretty low.

That said ... anybody who "likes their console because they can hook it up to a big HDTV and play at 720p resolution" can EASILY connect their PC to the same display, and a midgrade video card will usually allow the graphics quality settings to be very high at such a low resolution ...

Even then, this isn't an apples to apples comparison.

I personally don't enjoy console games very much. Most of the ones I've played seem "simple" (that's a big plus for many, but not me, I tend to like games that most console players would consider to be "overcomplicated.")

I like console games more than PC gaming. With a console, I can buy it, buy some games, and play.

I've also lost a little bit of my geek cred... just building PCs and tweaking stuff doesn't appeal to me anymore 🙁

Like BurnItDwn said... the prices of buying computer components is just getting higher and higher every year just to keep up with the cool games that come out. Also, what sonoma1993 said is true too because not all games that come out are very good only a select few... which applies for consoles as well but consoles are way cheaper!

Nice thing about consoles is they only have one main purpose which is to play the games. Everyone's console (of the same type) is the same so the designers don't have to worry about what graphics card you have, what processor you have, etc. Also when playing online, you don't have to worry about the other person having a better system than you.

That being said, PCs have a benefit because they rae always getting bigger, better, faster, etc. But buying a high end graphics card costs as much as a whole new console so I stopped playing games a long time ago.

But if money is no object, PC games pretty much will always outshine console games.

FPS on the PC is starting to get very uncreative.
For example. I want to mindlessly gun down humans, not mutants, just bad evil guys.
So FPS fall into one of three catogories:
1)MMO, Battlefields, Clancys, too much reliance on tactics or Online scenarios. Not bad, I like that from time to time.
2)WW2. I love WW2 stuff, but why only WW2?
3)Does everything have to compete with horror films? Why does it have to be a mutant or alien? (HL, Cryxxx, FEAR,STALKER, etc.)

What about Max Payne, or the human element in modern day life?
I just want to kill bad guys in a nice thought out storyline.

A nice comfy leather couch, a big screen TV, and free video game rentals with my online BB account has pretty much eliminated my PC gaming.

I just got sick of the hardware ratrace, patches, drivers, blah blah blah that came with PC gaming.

Only thing I do miss are RTS's. I never got into the WoW/Everquest sort of games.

My thoughts exactly ;-)

i agree with you about the cost of video cards have increase alot. I rememeber when I got a 3dfx voodoo3 2000 pci, It was only like $100 maybe even $130 tops

I like playing games on both the pc and console. With a console. it's easier to play games when my friends over. but i also like playing on the pc, because there some games that are available on the pc that arent on the console systems.

There have been doom and gloom reports on the death of PC Gaming for years. 2004 was the best year for PC gaming since 1998 and look how many reports on the death of PC gaming there were in between those years. There are many good games coming out this year and I suspect there will be another 1998 and 2004 to come.

I think PC is moving away from gaming to a certain extent. It has become an all in one media center. Games, movies, music, house control / lighting.. everything. OK perhaps not moving away from gaming as much as expanding beyond gaming.

That said, I have a decent computer. I plan on upgrading when Crysis comes out. I don't plan on purchasing any consoles anytime soon. I plan on making my computer into a media box when I'm not gaming.

PC has better games, and more user created content. Consoles are more of a casual, just play the game for the game type system.

Plus, you can't run Rosetta@Home on a console 😀

Really I see it as more of a convergence. Many of the great future games that will be PC-based will be RTS / MMO / Strategy because of the PCs ability to do these games better. If the console makers finally come out with keyboard and mouse setups, even that type of gaming could be nullified by a console. It may not look as pretty, but it will be optimized and work very well. If microsoft could come up with a WoW like game that could garner the numbers that Blizzard has received it would be on the live network and be playable by both Console and PC players.

Racing, sports, friend games, kids games, and many of the adventure titles will alwasy be the consoles land of opportunity. Losing many fo these game types in the PC arena is the reason most of us see PC gaming on the decline. I went back to my 360 as it is just as fun as any game I have played in the last 2 years (BF2 aside). Once Guitar hero comes out with downloadable content... I may not see my pc for a while.
