is overclocking dead?

i know that it is more popular then ever, but is that because of the number of kits available and the relative ease of recent overclocking? ive noticed the gains achieved by overclocking becoming smaller, and this processor generation requiring more than before. furthermore, recent clock speeds are fast enough that even with a substantial overclock, in practical usage, even gaming, the gains wont make the slightest bit of difference. i would hope that future applications would utilize processors better, but the current trend seems to put more emphasis on video cards. i hope the situation changes soon, i miss the old days of overclocking, when it was more about speed gain, and how that actually affected things like frames per second, loading times, and compilation times. now it seems just to be about the bling bling.

OCing a CPU is more of a bragging rights thing these days...the fact is the video card has replaced the CPU as the most expensive component in the system (in most cases). Therefore people are more likely to look for the best bang for the buck on the video side than on the CPU side.

Everybody has been there done that so I don't think it's such a big deal anymore. Plus the gains from OC'ing a CPU really isn't that noticable unless you run Benchmarks. Sure there are some dweebs that still sport woodies when talking aboput oc'ing but for the most part it's passe'

Yea, it's really bragging rights. Even though I can OC my 1.8A to 2.5, I really don't see a difference in my games.

i kind of got tired of watching my cpus bite the dust after only 6 months to a year of use. the voltage increases really eat them alive. my latest P4 is a monster though, i ran it at 2766/1.46V for a while. When I get some better cooling I'll up the voltage to the default and let her rip. without those big voltage boosts some people are using, i'd expect this one to last a long time.

the o/c is good for me cause i do tons of divx encoding, but for games and anything else, it's not noticable.

it really makes that much of a difference when you are encoding?!

I quit overclocking after my Celeron 300 to 450 fiasco. I decided stability is better than brute power...that, and buying today's hardware...today.
Of course, I am learning, that buying today's hardware is just like overclocking...maybe I am destined to have a slow stable computer.

It's dead in my opinion these days. CPUs are so fast, you won't see the overclocked gain in any games or anything.

i dont know why you think there gettin smaller. people gettin a 1.6 or 1.8 P4 to 2.5 or so is amazing and teh new 2.5s will do 3GHz and with the new dual channel DDR that commin out we can only dream.

i just hope teh nee AMD CPUs OC this well

dude, OCing makes a HUGE difference... sometimes almost 10 fps!

w00t for Divx and Ocing

Oh, and (pants bulge) BOING!

i think it's all relative:

if your computer habit costs you more than it earns you, you're likely to OC
if your computer habit makes you more than it costs, you stick with reliability/stability

Divx encoding is almost purely CPU dependent. The faster the processor, the better. That said, I overclock partly for the fun of it but also b/c I don't feel like buying a new computer right now.
(Currently running a cell 566@850. Plan on getting a celly 1.1A and o/c to 1.4)

wow totally the same systems, creepy. yea divx 2 pass high res divx5 on a 850 = not kewl. basically 1 day one movie:p the 1.48tually i have running now spits out the frames atleast twice as fast, its so sweet. it seems more stable to boot:p

not to mention playback. high res divx 5 playback on a celly 850 was borderline. u know what i mean ..if u encode just a little high it chokes:p not to mention you can't have all the playback enhancements turned on. now with all the playback options turned to max its really smooth and nice:)

as for lifespan, my 850 lasted almost 2 years at 2v. thats um way over spec.. wasn't spec 1.5v? anyways, my p2 400 lasted at 450 a long time over speck..its still going strong:p

2V!!!! I'm running mine at 1.65 w/ a PEP66 modded for my CUBX (fan on top). I actually wasn't having any DIVX problems until about two weeks ago. Guess I finally downloaded some "good" stuff.

I would OC but I dont know how. Where did all you guys learn how to do it? Im just getting into computers and wished someone would teach me. I have a 1600 AMD XP currently running at a wieny 1.4

What can I OC it to??

Check out the CPU/Overclocking forum. If you have a newer stepping 1600+ you might do well. Some people are getting them to 2000+ speeds. OC'ing also depends on your motherboard. ie, some motherboards have no overclocking options whatsoever. good luck! :)

I "overclocked" my 32x Lite-On burner to 40x - now THAT'S practical!

Thanks Hot Deals!

yea its about as high as i know for a celly 566 oc voltage. but i figure who cares if it dies, the chip isn't worth anything. its lasted anyways:p things are made to last 15 years. so even half that is way too long;)

and yea, the quality stuff is two cds, thats 717~mb overburn cds :) u try turning on all the extra divx 5.02 config stuff for playback?
