is overburning bad for CDRW

I went to overburn a disc using nero and it gave me a warning about how overburning can possibly cause damage to my CDRW. I was wondering if it is faily safe to overburn? I just got my new CDRW about a month ago, and i dont want to cook it already.

CDRW: Yamaha 3200EZ
NERO: 5.5.8.0

thanks for the help

Overburning might try to push the head farther than it can really go... depending on how smart the cdrw is it may cause it to hang or damage the mount.
In my own experience, I have only really had to overburn an 80 min cd once (by about 40 seconds) and my Plex241040 did it without any problems. I did let it do a simulation with nero beforehand... didn't seem to mind or give errors.

I had to RMA a HP 9110i burner on that account.

What did I learn. I will never do it again with my HP thats for sure.

Just my two cents worth.....

It could potentially cause damage, but I'd say it really depends upon the individual drive. Some drives officially support over-burning in which case I find it very unlikely it would be at all dangerous.

I've overburned to 740MB on my Lite-On 24x without problems. Unfortunately, the media wouldn't take more than around 740MB. 🙂
