Is Open Office getting bloated???

Just wondering if it's getting a little too large?

I disabled that auto startup feature it now has........(I hate when stuff starts up on its own)......and maybe that's what causes a little longer to open, but noticed that when I open any of the OO's programs, they take longer than office XP.

Think I'm gonna uninstall & go back to Office XP for now, but am gonna really be disappointed if OO's turning into bloatware!!!

After the first opening of each program after install, I find that it opens much quicker on subsequent attempts. It feels a little fat, but I like it for my limited office needs.

without the speed loader it opens in around 2-3 seconds for me.

with speed loader it is near instant.

It's much slower to open that the older versions. I've given up on OOo, I just use Google Docs for my limited word processing needs these days.

You mean full featured applications actually are larger and more unwieldy than cut-down-to-basics alternatives, no matter the business model? Say it isn't so!

I have noticed longer launch times going from Open Office 1.1.4 -> 2.0.x -> 2.2.x -> 2.4.2, even with the quick launch feature. Haven't tried 3.x yet.

Umm...that's how all applications work, unless they can somehow opt-out of caching and paging or numerous other applications are subsequently used after initial launch.

IBM Lotus Symphony is a nice alternative. It seems to work a bit faster. I'm not sure how well it is compatibility wise with Word documents though.

I never understood why any office app needs to be so big. It's not like it's doing anything all that complicated. It's basically a glorified html editor that saves in a special format (so images and stuff are embeded). I find this is happening to all software, programmers are just saying "screw it" when it comes to writing efficient code, figuring "today's computers are fast anyway".

That's not what I meant :^/ I'm talking about the very first time you use it after installing the program. It probably takes 5 times as long to load as any subsequent attempt, even after rebooting the machine.
