Is OneNote the best note organizer for Windows PC?

A friend recently told me that OneNote is the best note organizer for the PC. True?

Seems troublesome to transfer all my txt/word notes to OneNote, and the last thing I want is my notes ending up corrupted or lost. Is OneNote reliable? or are there better alternatives?

I have never known anyone that used it. So I am curious what the benefit is.

Typically I have created Notepad/Wordpad/Word and even Excel files for what I think the function of OneNote is.

I had a chance to play with OneNote 2007, and I can say probably the two biggest benefit i can see right off the bat is its ability to search and retrieve notes.

You can search file titles, text within files, make images searchable, and tag almost anything with a keyword. Also, the way notes are organized in OneNote seems easier than going through folders and folders to find the info you are looking for.

The only downside in my mind is going with with OneNote will be a one way street. It would be painful to revert the changes in my notes back to my old methods 6 months down the road if i decide to.

how long have you been using it? has it ever crap out on you(ie notes become corrupt or unable to open?)

I think that OneNote is a hidden gem in Office.
I use it every day to capture and organize information from web sites and to make notes on projects.

Among other things, you can capture images from web sites or videos and then be able to search for text in those images.

I have been using OneNote for several years. Never corrupted data.

The only downside I can see is that MS does not make an Android App that would let you access the OneNote information on your PC. There is a 3rd party that is building one now. But it is not yet available.

Reliable yes. Also with the latest version (2010) it has the option of syncing to the cloud. I can tell you i use both OneNote & Evernote. Evernote is much better in picking text up out of images and stuff like that. OneNote is supposed to do the same thing but it isn't that great. Where OneNote is much better is organization. For some reason Evernote won't allow nested folders. So i end up using both
