Lola

it is used a lot especially in the south.
I personally do not love it, nor do i hate it. You can buy it at most grocery stores as well.

I grew up in the south and it's a staple there. Breaded and fried is delicious and I'm not much of a vegetable person. It has to be done right though. If it's soggy, it sucks big time. It needs to be crunchy.

I grew up in Oklahoma, and okra seemed like it was in almost every restaurant. It was certainly in a restaurant that was more about "feel good food." All bbq restaurants have it.

Living in Atlanta, I don't see okra as often, but it's still in all the same type of restaurant.

What area are you from in India? My girlfriend is Indian, but she's never cooked with okra. She's from Hyderabad. Is it a northern thing?

As I've mentioned.. some have it.. some don't..
I know sometimes the KFC in Hanover, PA will have it.
YMMV :)

As Jemcam has mentioned.. it has to be crunchy.. it cannot be half-assed cooked..
When breaded and fried, it should be a golden brown.. kind of like fried chicken...

its used extensively in cajun cuisine - New orleans area especially. I dont like it due to its texture.

My mom used to grow it and pickle it, man that was some good stuff

can't you get fried okra as a side in all cracker barrels?

and it's already been stated, but it's used a lot in creole/cajun type food

I grew up with it in the South - Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas. I don't like it because of the texture but it can be fried on its own, sliced into rounds and put into beef stews and gumbo. Chopped and put into meatloaf and casseroles. Search for "soul cooking" and you will find okra recipes. Soul basically referes to the basic staples that poor people usually eat.

Items like okra and grits are becoming trendy dishes in bigger cities, though.

Our Captain D's has it too. I like it fried, stewed with tomatoes, and in gumbo. I grew some "cajun delight" okra last year in the garden, and had enough of it to last me a while though.

It's not too common in the midwest. I rarely see it at a grocery store. Occasionally at restaurants. Generally I get my okra fix at indian restaurants or in the form of morningstar okra patties.
