Is OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W a good PSU choice

Hi everybody,

I am planning a new budget build and choosing my components.
It will be Intel i5 2500k with the highly recommended ASROCK z68 EXTREME 3 motherboard and for the video card it will be ASUS HD 6850 1gb Direct CU or the similar Powercolor HD 6850.

My goal is to get a decent budget PSU which is modular. The OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W is modular and has more than enough power for me (no SLI or Crossfire planned). It received quite a good rating on newegg with many reviews:

Right now here in Canada, this card can be had for about $40 after mail-in-rebate, which is a steal for even non-quality 600w PSU I assume.

Is this PSU a good one? I know that a PSU is not something that should be skimped on, since all other parts depend on it. I know that CORSAIR, Seasonic and Antec make quality PSUs, but they all approach the $100 mark (disregarding the CORSAIR Builder series which got mixed reviews).

Is it a better idea to spend an extra $50 and choose among CORSAIR, Seasonic or Antec PSU?

Thnx.

Thanks

I'd try to get the ZT Series instead.

I recently got my 550w ZT (Fully Modular) for $69.99 with a $25 MIR besides that, bring it down to $44.99.

The ZT series is a much better PSU than the Modxstream series. The ZT can do a full 550w (45a) on a single 12v rail while being quieter and more efficient. It's OEM is also better quality then the Modxtream series, using better Caps especially.

I was skeptical about buying a OCZ PSU due to having a Modxtream 700w crap out on me like 2 years ago with only a few months use for a tight budget build I did for a friend (2x 6950, 1090T @ 3.9 GHz) For my friends build, We ended up buying a XFX 750w "XXX" PSU (Seasonic built) and selling the Modxstream RMA we got back. I have bought a good 20 PSU's since (all Kingwin or Seasonic) until I picked up the ZT.

So far, so good.

$44.99 deal I got at NCIX is still good until Wednesday:

EDIT: If you can get away with not using Modular (putting unused cables behind motherboard tray if you've got a decent case), then I'd go with a XFX Core 650w. Probably the best bang for dollar PSU available.

I snagged that OCZ ModXtream 600w a few weeks ago for 36.99 after MIR.

has been solid ever since, haven't shut my PC off in the 13~days since I got it.

I'm running a pretty bare build though:
i5 2500
gtx 560
intel SSD
one BDR drive

Well see how it holds up, reviews seem okay for it, I've used Antec almost exclusively in the past but this was a good buy for semi-modular and I'm liking it so far.

I have the ModXstream 600W. I also have an OCZ SSD that blue screens quite often due to some kind of power issue, but from what I understand that's an issue with the SSD, not the PSU. I've had it for about 9 mos now and havent had any other issues.

I don't know if they ship to Canada but right now Microcenter has the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 600w for $90. AR $70. It's modular, SATA cables are flat ribbon. One on board PCI-e cable and of course 2 others. It also designates what plug to use for the second PCI-e cable. It's single rail, which I prefer. I's also very quiet. IIRC the OCZ's are split into 3 rails.

Picked up last night when my new GTX 560 Ti killed my very old Antec 500w modular. ;)

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Even though some of you posted positive feedback about this card, after doing more research, I decided not to purchase it. Too many mixed reviews about OCZ power supplies.
I will most likely purchase a CORSAIR or a Seasonic PSU, since they are so highly rated.
CORSAIR TX650 got excellent reviews and can be found online at around $80. But I really hate the fact that it is non modular. Maybe it is a good idea for me to get a 500w PSU, since they are cheaper and will suit my specs, since I am not planning to Crossfire down the road.
Looks like the PSU would be the last component I will buy, since the options out there are just too obscure.

Thanks again.
