Is obtaining a fashion design degree a worthwhile thing to do?

My gf just graduated from a 4 yr uc with a business major and now she wants to go to LA Trade Tech College (http://www.lattc.edu/lattc/catalog/catalog_ed_programs.htm )

She wants to pursue a fashion design degree and keeps asking me if it's a good idea. In the back of my head I don't see much in it because I rarely hear anything about it or see job postings on monster and such. I don't want to pass judgement on it so soon w/o doing some research on the school at least... well i tried to do some googling and couldn't find anything about it other than what is said on their own website.

So here I am in ATOT, wondering if you guys have any input or experience about fashion design...

Would it be a good idea to pursue a career in fashion? thanks.

Put the bitch to work. You need more time to nef on OT and can't do it if she doesn't support you.

As an architecture student, I see many graduates persuing a carreer in fashion.

But my course offers anything from construction, to art history, to visual comunication. It's a mixed bag that allows for different careers.

After fashion school, people become apprentices with designers. Designers dont need to advertise. Most are lined up through the schools. Thats why there arent any job postings.

I used to live around the corner from Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. Yeah, those degrees were worth something. Good contacts in the industry.

My first reaction would be that the money and time could be better spent bashing one's head against a wall. I would definitely want to find out the average job/salary,etc. of people getting her degree. It's not like the job market is hopping with opportunity to the extent that somebody with a fashion design "degree" will be able to jump out of school and demand a good salary. I'm sure that there are some schools where the grads do that but you probably have to be a super star to even get in. I'd think that the average Fashion design degree is a farce, but again I am speaking only from ASSumptions.

I'd say that if she really has the creative talent and drive for it, then she should pursue her dream. On the other hand, if she's doing it because she doesn't know what else to do, then she should probably work towards a different goal.
