Will my older mobo be compatible with a slightly newer GPU? Will I need to update BIOS, etc?

Nah. Anything will work with that board. Staying with Nvidia will make your install much easier, but AMD will work if you don't mind some external programs to nuke the drivers.

If you do get an Nvidia card, go ahead and get the latest drivers installed before you pop the old card out, and the new card should be a pretty easy swap.

That last part may be an issue. My computer would not let me install drivers to my machine with out the card installed (when I ran iGPU). My computer will not even show a screen now, it just says "NO SIGNAL" on my monitor, even though my machine will Post and I hear the Windows login music play.

I don't think so... I've got a GTX760 and GTX970 on my Z68 boards without issues.

I've got a used GTX560Ti 448 that I'm fixing to list (replacing it with a GTX950 in the HTPC) if you want a cheap card with decent performance... but I understand not gaming any longer, my GAME rig sat idle for almost 3 months over the holidays. Just don't have the time...

I had the same problem when I reinstalled my GTX760 last OS reload... I had to put the card in before it would allow me to install the drivers via the installer. But I was still able to use the iGPU to navigate, then I disabled the iGPU once the drivers loaded, then switched the video cables.

As Charlie98 mentioned, don't worry about it. It will be fine with whatever you have. You actually got more warning then I have in the best. I have only had two cards fail, but both just showed no display when turning them on, after being fine the day before.

That's cool. Your on-chip graphics will work out just fine then!

It supports a max Res of 1280 x 1024 though. Can't watch anything of high quality on it, so it still sucks.

The onboard graphics of your CPU (Intel HD 2000)support resolutions up to 2560x1600. If you can't get up to that, sounds like you don't have the drivers for your Intel graphics installed. They are a separate install from your chipset drivers.

I would also recommend removing your video card, as it isn't doing you any good at this point.

Also, make sure your Intel HD graphics driver is enabled in Device Manager... I disable mine once my GPU is up and running.

Sounds like I don't have it installed. I will download it tonight and see how that goes. As long as I'm not gaming, would iGPU be enough to watch HD youtube videos and view high res photos? Since I'm not gaming really anymore, this would be adequate for now.

You should be fine. I have a Sandy Bridge Pentium with a lower model integrated GPU in my laptop that still does what I need.

My HTPC originally had a lowly G620 Sandy Pentium and it drove my 1080p TV, streaming movies and Netflix (et al.)

When I first built my 2500K rig, I didn't have enough money for a decent gaming GPU... so I used the HD2500 graphics to play Modern Warfare and BF3, single player. It didn't like it, but it did it!

Sweet, okay thanks! I didn't get a chance to do the driver installs, but I will get around to it sometime this week. If I get any more issues I will report back, but assume if I don't that I got HD video working with the onboard graphics.

Good deal! People poo-poo the iGPU, but even as far back as Sandy i5 (HD2500) they are pretty decent for regular use.
