Is now a particularly good time to upgrade?

Hey everyone, I noticed a lot of people are upgrading their systems with similar or better specs than mine. If I were to spend about 1000-1200 right now could someone give me a ballpark estimate of what percent performance boost I would see? Is it possible to get double the performance? Sorry I haven't been staying up on technology the past year.

Pretty big. Scrapping the P4 for Athlon 64 and the 9700 with a x800xl or 6800gt and youll see a significant boost in performance. $1200 is more than enough to get your computer upgraded.

. And i just find your post funny, "hey, i noticed ppl are upgrading." I bet a few months come around and the same amount of ppl will be upgrading as now. This is anandtech forums and if someone isnt currently upgrading then the world is at its apocalypse

it's never a good time to upgrade if you like having money...

it all depends on whether or not your system does what it you want it to do. let's say a new game comes out, you want to play it, you cant or you can only play it on graphics that are so unacceptable that you don't want to play it anymore. then you have to decide if you want to upgrade. just upgrading for the sake of upgrading though... what's the point? if your computer still has life in it, why not stick with it?

EVERYTIME is a good time to upgrade for someone who is looking to upgrade. There is always newer & better technology just around the corner, don't kid yourself into thinking waiting will give you the best deal. If your current system is not fast enough for the tasks you want to run on it, then start looking at new parts.
