Is now a good time to be buying video cards?

I am asking because I have 2 gtx 480. I was thinking of upgrading to 2 gtx 680. But I am concerned because unreal engine 4 is coming out. This may not be the usual trend but usually we see the graphics cards trying to catch up to software dont we. . Like when crysis came out. I had 3 gtx 280 at the time. If I remember correctly and I still couldnt get it past high lol. They where the newest cards out at the time.

Am I wrong to think this way. It usually happens in this manner doesnt it? I am assuming that I will need better graphics cards to play unreal engine 4 at good settings.

I'd say its a pretty good time. We're not near the end of this GPU cycle, so whatever you buy now will last you for some time. You'll definitely appreciate 2x 680s over sli 480s.

We are somewhat past that point a bit now. They will continue to come out no matter what. If you had the latest then, what would stop you now or in the future lol?

Well if I waited say 6-8 months I would be able to get the next gen graphics cards is what I am hoping. I am sure the next gen will have to be a pretty good step up to keep up with the new software.

I am really looking forward to playing fortnite or whatever its called when it comes out.

That's true if you can wait 6-8 months. But I sold my card and I don't think I can run Intel HD for 6-8 months..and the tv is always used so no ps3 either.

You can always buy a card now that fits your budget then sell it a year from now and upgrade to the latest and greatest?

Would you believe I am always 2 or 3 generations behind in video cards. I have NEVER bought the latest and best video card at any time in my life.

Then again, I am not a heavy gamer due to real life responsibilities.

Heck I've never owned the greatest and the latest ever. What I am trying to do now is get a card better than what I had, which was an msi 560ti.

I don't game much either too busy with work, other hobbies too. But I was so tired of not being able to play a game on my pc before I had a decent build computer years ago. So now I don't mind spending to get good performance but I would never buy top of the line, I have too many bills haha.

You think you have it bad?

My old desktop died like 8 months ago and I am forced to use an old Dell laptop from 2008 that looks like it has been hit by numerous IED's (haha).

Of course, I do not game at all and wonder when can I upgrade to a proper desktop? Too many damn things on my plate now:(

Given that price/perf increases have slowed down and will probably keep slowing down in the future (aside from a momentary bump up when wafers go to 450mm), this is not a bad time to upgrade or anything, but only if you need the power. Consoles are rumored to be teh suck next gen, so it's likely that today's high end will still be enough to power any console port in 2014. Also, read this:

I was much happier playing on my pc than on my ps3. Even if the ps3 had a way larger screen. After a while a good gpu in the pc will blow away console graphics.
