Is now a bad time to get the iPad mini?

No one has any idea whether the Mini will get a retina display later this year. Saying it like it's a fact is just risking disappointment.

Got it. Personally I don't like iPad mini, I occasionally use textbooks/professional books and for that reason size of the iPad combined with retina display is perfect for me. Small screen, no retina display plus not marginally cheaper than normal iPad, which is why I suggested Kindle Fire HD.

I like the mini for certain things such as browsing forums and email on the go. It's also not bad for some games. When I upgrade next year I'll be looking forward to a better screen though. The current one just isn't that good.

You could always pick one up used on Craigslist and then it won't depreciate as much if you want to upgrade their iPads later this year.

Personally, I bought iPad minis form myself and my kids. I had an iPad 3 with retina screen, but honestly feel that the form factor makes up for lack of retina screen.

Who knows when they will be updated. My money is in the fall and with that the case I wouldn't wait that long if it's something you need. Same rule applies with any tech product. If you need it, buy it. If not wait. There is always an updated model coming. Buy when you need it.
