Is now a bad time for a MBP?

I'm currently selling my macbook air on ebay because I dont travel as much and I was going to purchase a 17in macbook pro with the money but I'm starting to see all these new things people are saying. Is it a bad time to get a MBP? I thought the current hardware in the macbook pro is pretty much top of line except for some extreme proc or 8800 card.

Well there are already leaks about the next MBP... I'd wait. Apple's "free iPod Touch" deal ends September 15. I'm willing to bet that the next MBP will come out some time after that.

Yea but I dont really want to wait that many months. I saw the leaked pics of the case and honestly the case looks exactly the same.

The rumors also hint at a MBA/MB style chicklet keyboard, which IMO, is one of the glaring flaws of the current MBP. I couldn't stand the keyboard of the current one, way too squishy for me.

It may look exactly the same from those pics, but I would wait to see what the finished product is. Rumored to be sometime between Now and October.

agreed. and if the whole user HDD thing is true, that would make it well worth it.

however, with that said, I have an ongoing issue w/ 1st generation redesigns. I've been burned enough (across all companies) to do what I can to hold back, heh.

I agree that the chicklet keyboard would be a plus. My macbook air had one and it was amazing to type on it really was but I mean cmon guys the keyboard should not determine weather or not to purchase it now or later. Plus the current MBP keyboard is not that bad, yes its cramped but the action is still really good.

So all you care about is what it LOOKS like? I was referring to the hardware specs. With Intel's Montevina chipset coming, as well as new graphics cards all around, there's quite a bit to wait for I'd say...

But if all you care about is looks and you like the current design, go for it 🙂

Apple refurbs are a bargain. full warranty, brown box, huge savings.

With apple, there will always be something "just around the corner." I always say, if you need it now, buy it. It's not like you are going to get a bad computer. If you can wait for the next "big event" where they might debut something, go ahead any wait.

Yes, but we all basically know what the next one will have. So at this point, the more unknown is the look of it. And although Montevina is nice I don't think it will be so extraordinary an upgrade over the existing model that a person couldn't let the design be the deciding factor.

Well said Stu. I think the only thing Montevina can improve with is the battery life. I mean if its that big a difference then it may be worth waiting for. Just not for me *whips out the credit card*.

The unfortunate thing is that the one thing Montevina DOES have, that WOULD be a big difference maker -- WiMax -- is not likely to be supported. Although Apple's done crazier things in the past, I guess.

Yes, but is WiMax anywhere near ubiquitous enough to justify adding it to millions of machines? I mean, it is sort of a chicken and the egg situation. WiMax won't become big until more devices have it, but the devices that have it can't use it until it becomes more prevalent.
