than going out. I cooked for myself and it usually ends up being ~6 dollars per meal. That's about the same as eating out! The quality of the food is better if I cook tho :p

That has been my experience too. I got tired of paying $4 - $7 everytime during lunch, so I decided to cook my own lunch. And all the stuff would usually cost me around $4-6 + time to prepare.

Well..here what I'm cooking

-Miso Salmon (5 bucks)
-Rice
-Fried egg
-gas, electricity, dishwasher, etc

If I could chicken it would be around 3 bucks a meal I think. The only reason I bother cook is that I want to eat "healthy"

rice = buy big bag, save big
eggs = buy on sale or buy cheap ones. heck i buy them at whole foods, 1.49/dozen. grade A but whatever. eggs are eggs.
salmon = either you're going to buy fresh or fish farm free which is expensive, or buy on sale in value packs and freeze what you don't eat.
miso = buy the jar of paste.

electricity = negligible.

my lunch today was pasta and an apple. no way that cost 4-6 bucks. i buy pasta only on sale. (i.e. 5 for $4.00 boxes of barilla pasta, sauce 2 jars for $5.00 + 1.00 coupon that's doubled, etc)

you bargain shop all your computer parts, and you won't learn to grocery bargain shop!

How much salmon are you eating 1lb+ at a time??? I mean seriously you are just not shopping properly. In a restaurant, you'd get about 4oz if that for $5.

If you are eating alone you are equally an idiot to use a dishwasher...talk about wasting water.

I buy my stuff at 99 ranch market. I think the salmon is more than 1lbs. Probably won't finish it all, but I don't underestimate myself nowadays :p

I didn't mean dishwasher.....just the soap.
I guess I exaggerated a bit. Usually is around 3 dollars. Today is more expensive

"Is not cheaper" vs. "It is not cheaper".. "it" doesn't seem to be a part of her vocab.. I think it's charming though, don't get offended!

Cooking can be expensive, but if you have to pay more attention to what you're buying and know how much of what to buy, you should be better off than eating out at the usual places. You will also probably have better tasting food. Knowing how to cook(not just following instructions on a recipe you find online) is important too cause some recipes just call for expensive ingredients that you'll never use again, so you just waste more money that way.

haha no problem. I think is because in Spanish you wouldn't need "it" in that sentence, so I guess I'm just used to it

I rarely spend $6/meal when I cook. That's just nuts. I made BBQ ribs today and it probably only cost me about $7 and it fed 2 people!

Without looking, I believe the pasta I have is also barilla pasta... but, 5 for $4 sucks! I thought you said grocery bargain shop? I got it when it was 3 for $1 :D And name brand sauce, 2 jars for $2, then toss in a coupon that gets doubled.

You're eating too expensively. I can cook a touch cheaper than decent fast food, like subway. If I want cheap calories mcdonalds is hard to beat, but I don't eat there often.
