Are you talking about Nissan/Toyota/Honda as a brand or regarding individual cars?
For instance, the KA24DE & the VQ3xDE & SR20DE & VG30DE are very stout motors that just refuse to die. However the VE30DE has a problem with the Variable Timing Control (that fails after a while..however engine still runs fine, but loses some topend power). Note those are all Nissan engines. The VE30DE was used in the '91-'94 Maxima SEs.
I've had experience with a) '91 Corolla that my family had for 11 years (I drove it for around 2 years) b) '99 Maxima GLE (still have it) c) '95 240SX (totalled) d) 99 Camry LE (which we have now).
The Corolla had two nagging problems: a) door handles would break over time (this is common in '91 Corollas since I found a few other cars that had the same problem, and in the junkyard you couldn't find doorhandles on those cars) b) muffler/exhaust pipes would rust.
Other than that, the car was faultless. Engine was awesome as was the 3-spd tranny that refused to die even after my abusing it.
The Maxima has been faultless and it has seen the drag strip and auto-cross course.
The 240SX was also faultless, started right up in -30C weather, etc.. But it did have its quirks (which are common for 240SXs in NA). The tranny would grind 1st & 2nd when the car is cold (its fine once it warms up). Amsoil syn tranny oil made it a whole lot better.
The Camry is relaible in terms of powertrain, but it has its quirks too, that piss me off. The steering "whines" when you turn it and just feels odd at low speeds. Also the brakes suck ass.
I'd rate Nissan and Toyota to be equal. Both have excellent powertrains and both have excellent build quality. And I'd put up Honda with them too, actually I'd put Honda before Toyota. Their cars seem to be built a tad better than Toyotas.
But either way you'r getting a reliable car. And the 240SX is a very unique car, no other makes have something in that price point and that range. It's the only sport Japanese RWD coupe you can find in that price range.
