is Nissan as good of a car as a honda or toyota I am looking at a 240sx

Nissan is more reliable than Honda IMO. 240sx is reliable as a rock. It has the same engine has the older Altimas and they have great reliability.
I had a 240sx and my family still has it. 145,000 miles on it. No Problems

Lots of little things go wrong with my 240sx. Door broke, the dashboard AC back lights don't all work, stuff like that. Nothing wrong with the engine and such though. Alignment goes off really easily.

Honda and Toyota will last a very long time if you take good care of them. Our 91' accord is running till today with like 160k+ miles and no major problems. Biggest problem, which in itself is small, was a small plastic piece which guides the window's movement up and down broke off, it was a cheap fix too.

Why do people say Honda is reliable? Maybe the early 90s, but has anyone seen their track record for their newer cars? My acura had 3 tranmission failures all before 30,000 miles!.

Link?

You havn't heard about the Acura problem? This problem also happens in the v6 Hondas.
Go on yahoo and type Honda Transmission problem or Acura transmission problem. You will see thousands of links. If anyone has the link to the Acura boards with all the owners (Including myself) about all the trannys dying please post it.

The 98-03 accord, odyssey, TL/CL have problems with their auto trannies in varying degrees. The problem affects mostly V6 models, but I do personally know someone who has a bad I4 accord. For the same model/year, some cars have this problem, some don't. My impression of this problem is that if you own a potentially afflicted model, your chances of actually having this problem is still <10%. Honda has given a 100K extended powertrain warranty to potentially afflicted models.

Yes, this is a well established problem, but it hardly makes all late model hondas/acuras unreliable. My family has bought 4 new hondas (2 2001 civic, 2002 accord, 2003 accord) over the past two years and not a single one has had a problem yet. JD power still ranks Hondas as having industry leading initial and long term quality.

the nissan engines are supposed to ve very reliable. i am going to get a 97' maxima se with 80k miles in a few days

Nissan is just a tad under Honda/Toyota for reliable IMO.
My family is nearly an all Nissan family and all cars (except mine) have 100K+ miles with minimal/minor repairs done.

My friend just killed a 240SX at 180k miles and bought another one w/120k in excellent mechanical condition.

AND CHECK HERE!

I have owned more Nissans that Hondas. But feel Honda is the better vehicle. And I am not swayed by the fact that my wife sells Hondas.

My Dad has a 91 Maxima with 109K on the clock with no major repairs. It will need its first set of exhaust soon, not bad for a 10 year old car in the IL winters.

From my experience Nissan and Toyota have been very reliable. The Maxima is known to have excellent reliabilty. As a brand I would say Toyota is prolly a tad better in reliabilty.

My experiences with Hondas has been very positive.
I have owned two Hondas:
1. A CRX which had 240K miles on it before someone rear ended me and totaled it.
2. An Integra which had 190K miles before someone rear ended me and it was stolen from the body shop parking lot and totaled it.

I only had to do standard maintenance on the Honda. I had to replace the clutch in the Acura after 150K. I was dogging the clutch because the post ignition starter coil , something like that, was going out

All I know is early 1990s Hondas do not break. I do not care what you do, but their engine nor transmission seem to fail. I even went without an oil change for 10,000 miles in one of them and it still was running... blah

Not as good as Honda or toyota in general, but easily as good or better in powertrain reliability.

Are you talking about Nissan/Toyota/Honda as a brand or regarding individual cars?

For instance, the KA24DE & the VQ3xDE & SR20DE & VG30DE are very stout motors that just refuse to die. However the VE30DE has a problem with the Variable Timing Control (that fails after a while..however engine still runs fine, but loses some topend power). Note those are all Nissan engines. The VE30DE was used in the '91-'94 Maxima SEs.

I've had experience with a) '91 Corolla that my family had for 11 years (I drove it for around 2 years) b) '99 Maxima GLE (still have it) c) '95 240SX (totalled) d) 99 Camry LE (which we have now).

The Corolla had two nagging problems: a) door handles would break over time (this is common in '91 Corollas since I found a few other cars that had the same problem, and in the junkyard you couldn't find doorhandles on those cars) b) muffler/exhaust pipes would rust.

Other than that, the car was faultless. Engine was awesome as was the 3-spd tranny that refused to die even after my abusing it.

The Maxima has been faultless and it has seen the drag strip and auto-cross course.

The 240SX was also faultless, started right up in -30C weather, etc.. But it did have its quirks (which are common for 240SXs in NA). The tranny would grind 1st & 2nd when the car is cold (its fine once it warms up). Amsoil syn tranny oil made it a whole lot better.

The Camry is relaible in terms of powertrain, but it has its quirks too, that piss me off. The steering "whines" when you turn it and just feels odd at low speeds. Also the brakes suck ass.

I'd rate Nissan and Toyota to be equal. Both have excellent powertrains and both have excellent build quality. And I'd put up Honda with them too, actually I'd put Honda before Toyota. Their cars seem to be built a tad better than Toyotas.

But either way you'r getting a reliable car. And the 240SX is a very unique car, no other makes have something in that price point and that range. It's the only sport Japanese RWD coupe you can find in that price range.
