I mean you seriously have to wonder.

Why the hell is there still no online support?

Mario kart and F-Zero, among some other games would rock online.

Why dont those clowns at Nintendo realize how important online play is to there console?

Right now i cant decide between an Xbox and a Gamecube, if nintendo had online play, i would go with the Gamecube in a heartbeat.

Not everyone can have 8 friends over at there place everyday to play video games.

I would imagine they are, but smart monkeys. I mean, they've been able to stay alive making the same games over and over again just with new hardware.
 
The people who design most of their games are geniuses, but whoever makes the hardware/business decisions is a monkey.

I still maintain that making the N64 cartridge-based was one of the worst business decisions in the last 50 years.

it loads faster

I tried playing FF anthology on PS and everytime it hit a battle scene you'd have to wait until the cd spins up.

that is no fun

Umm, because they had an online feature as far back as the SNES, and it wasn't popular. Look at the Xbox and it's online play, how popular is it? Not as popular as you think. DC had online features as well... how popular were they?

They're not dumb... back in the SNES days, their online feature was the Japanese version of AOL... you could log in with your nintendo to not only play games, but check stocks, email, etc.

I used to love the X-Band. Myself and a bunch of friends all had it.
 
if you want to play online games the PC is still the way to go, gamecube has great single player games, and it is a bargain right now.

Online support is NOT critical for consoles. Broadband is NOT universal, and many games CAN NOT be played smoothly on dialup. In fact, very few can. Racing game on a 300 ping? Hell no! Fighting game on a 300 ping? Not going to happen. What does online support mean for me? Diddly squat.

Big N lost their market share due to this myopic decision, but because the carts were pre-sold to the publishers, with N pocketing all the profits, they didn't come out all that bad. i'd contend that Sega's console plans/ marketing were a better example a huge business blunder.
 
Nintendo have said themselves they are waiting to see what M$ and $Sony$ do with the online gaming. Remember, not everyone has broadband. Nintendo does make great games, and does put together some good hardware, but their PR/marketing and business decisions aren't always spot on. They've replaced their president of late so some new more with the times decisions might be seen yet.
 
I saw on CNN Headline news that Nintendo had 37% decrease in profits on Gamecube for Jan-Feb. I'm guessing the free game giveaway that started in February had something to do with it. I'd hate to see March-April numbers.

I don't know how important online play is. I got Xbox Live the day it came out and I have not been online in two months.
 
I think Nintendo made the right decision towards on-line gaming. Why not let MS who has a ridiculous amount of disposable cash be the guinea pig? Xbox live is great and its a HUGE plus for the Xbox, but besides MechAssault, at least Socom and possibly other live games have trouble keeping a large enough user base.

I believe Tallgeese said something along those lines in another video game thread.

Because the high costs associated with producing cartridges caused the games to be much more expensive back then, which drove people away from Nintendo (into the waiting arms of Sony). Sure, cartridges were faster in most respects but CDs could hold more data and had better sound. Nintendo was essentially being arrogant in sticking with their archaic format (and launching their console for $50 more than the PS and Saturn). They promised that stupid 64DD thing, and that never even got off the ground.

Plus, there is the issue of backwards compatibility. The PS2's library of games is GIGANTIC compared to the GameCube's. Nintendo should have known the cartridge format would die as CD technology improved.

Yes, cartridges had their advantages, but the negatives (mainly cost) easily outweighed the positives IMO. I thinik the sales speak for themselves... Sony went with CD and now they utterly dominate the market.

Edit: Nintendo HAS managed to stay profitable despite all this, but they could have remained the dominant force instead of declining almost into a niche player.

Nintendo is working on a broadband adaptor I hear... but who knows when that will be out...
