Is NE1 using a K&N air filter for your car?

I just got a 15% coupon in the mail from Performance, and I was looking to get a K&N air filter. It costs $48 - 15% discount for a total of $40.50. For that money, is it worth it?

I'm converting my stock airbox setup to a Cone setup, so I'm not sure of the drop-in increases. I doubt you'll see much of an improvement with a replacement drop in filter, but at least you can reuse it and save a little $$ down the road

I use them in all the cars. I think it's worth it because you don't need to replace the filter ever! I believe you're supposed to change air filter every 15k or so right? Well this one you just clean it. Typically an air filter costs what $15 or so? Well you'll save some eventually.

The only Pain in da A$$ part of the filter is that when you clean it, you have to let it air dry. That's why I have two! Hahaha... but no one really does this. I used to just clean it on weekends, if I know I'm not gonna be out driving. You might also save a little on gas mileage. But if you ahve a newer car with ODBII, then it's possible the enigne light might come one. Stupid OBDII!!!

I used to say they weren't worth it. Then I put one in my Tahoe and promptly got 1 mpg better. Wasn't a temporary gain, either.

Yeah, I'm using it. I'd go ahead and use it since it'll save you the headache of buying an air filter again. You just clean it out after 50K miles or so.

Shipping is $11.50 though. Damn that sucks! An filter can't weight THAT much:Q

lets too much crud and dirt into my engine for me to use one... I'll stick to the paper and sacrifice airflow.

It'll give you maybe 3-5 wheel hp and a slightly better engine sound...
worth $50? not really.

<< hey, I was thinking in getting one, does it fit in all car?
can I 'install' it by myself?
>>

Yeah, it's as easy as just replacing your stock air filter...

You can get em from local stores too like NAPA/Pep-boys or whatever is in your area. One thing to base it on.. How long you gonna have the car.. Basically I clean mine maybe twice a year because of off-road and the blower. But it lastes forever and still looks new even 2 years later.

I had one on my ford bronco. It really depends on how much a regular filter is for your car.Its easier to just throw away a regular one than go thru the pain of cleaning a K&N.On the bronco it had to be cleaned often because it was driven off road but it did give a little gain in mileage because of the lower restriction.

A friend of mine slapped it in his 1999 VW Cabriolet... got 10KPH more out of every gear supposedly. Im gonna slap on in my car in a week or two here and see if it makes any difference.

I got one for my dad's car just for fun.

he was just coming back from a 3 month vacation, so I added some engine restore stuff to the engine and replaced the airfilter for him.

when he got back, he said, "is it just me, or is the car a little more responsive now?". I personally didn't notice any difference except for the humming sound when you take the car to higher RPMs (K&N filter sound). But he didn't even know I put in a new filter and added engine restore... so there's gotta be a little increase in output from the filter... (Unless that engine restore stuff was REALLY that good)

anyway, good luck :)

I wonder how many of the people claiming hp gains are actually dyno testing their cars.....

The sad truth of the matter is that with today's electronics controlling air flow, fuel mixture, etc. just installing a free-flowing air filter (with stock intake) makes no difference in fuel economy or power. In fact I notice some people mention installing cone-type filters which may actually sap more power given that it is intaking hot air from the engine compartment rather than the cooler location specified by the manufacturer.

Buy the K&N for its lower maintenance and the increased intake noise that gives the impression of power. Unless you drive a car with a larger displacement engine, any gains are purely psychological. Increased gains can only be realized with proper intake modification in addition to a freer flowing filter.

thank you for posting that freebee. I see enough posts around here about someones little dohicky that gives them 3-5mental hp. If you wanna back it up by a dyno sheet, i'm down, but somehow i don't think it's gunna happen.

i got a newbie question,

if i get a decent intake system, will it cancel out the benefit of the K&N filter? (you know what I mean?)

ie:
intake alone: + 10 hp

KN alone: + 5 hp

intake AND KN: + 10 hp and not 15hp
