Is my Xbox 360 dying again?

I've already experienced the RRoD on this Xbox and the day before that happened, everything would freeze after a few minutes. This one is a little different ...

Last night I finally got around to playing Burnout Paradise (which is great, btw) and about half an hour in, the game freezes. The odd thing is that the dashboard still works, so I hit the "xbox" button on the controller and exit the frozen game. I then proceed to restart the game and it tells me the recent update is corrupt. So I delete the update and shut down the console for a while.

Later in the evening, I'm attempting to watch a movie on a DVD-R and about 2/3 of the way through, it locks up and spits out an error that it's attempting to read the media. This whole time the dashboard still works, so I restart the movie and it locks up again at the same point. Thinking it might be a disc problem, I try it in my computer and it plays just fine. I try it once again in the Xbox and this time it plays further, but freezes about 10 minutes past the previous point.

Cliffs:
- Burnout Paradise locks up, but dashboard works
- DVD-R locks up multiple times during playback with message "attempting to read media"

Is this the beginning of the end for my Xbox again? Anyone else have similar problems? Does the MS extended warranty cover drive problems or just RRoD?

My xbox is one of the "1st gen" 360's. It's almost 2 years old at this point.

this doesn't sound like RRoD, it sounds more like the DVD drive is going, which MS does not cover under the extended warranty. if it DOES go you can always get a replacement drive, however getting it to work will cause you to void your warranty and be a slight learning process for you.

Looked up some info on drive replacement and it looks like a PITA. Might be a good time to pick up a cooler xbox w/ hdmi. Does the base arcade come with hdmi?

my drive locked up a while back. unfourtunatly it is usually caused by a simple broken rubber band, which probably costs MS about 10 cents. it will cost you $100 +shipping. microsoft only offers one repair service for the 360. no matter how simple and cheap the repair is, they will charge you $100 for reasons unknown. i simply gave up and purchased a 360 arcade and just transfered my hard drive to it. works flawlessly.

yah, that's basically what I'm thinking. From what the intarwebs are saying, the "jasper" 360's are either out or just around the corner and there's a chance that the arcade is going to drop to $200 in a few weeks. Hopefully my xbox will work until then.
