Is my wired home network slow?

Just networked my two home computers via a netgear router and it seems to me that the transfer rate is mighty slow even though I dont know how to test it. I've been transfering large video files from one pc to the other and it took a long while. Can someone tell me what kind of speed I should expect from this set up and how can I test it? Thanks.

Thanks, those were very helpful. Looks like my transfer rate is around 80Mbps which is where its supposed to be and according to that site, Gigabit ethernet doesnt deliver more than a 25% improvement right now. I do have a firewire card in each PC so I was thinking of just hooking up a cable and transfering via firewire. Would this work and is there anything special I need to do or do I just hook up the cable and turn on the PC?

Bind the Firewire's TCP/IP Connection to File Sharing and it would be like regular Network.

Otherwise take into consideration Firewire is restricted to short Cable (about 15').
