My wife's ipod has stopped responding such that the apple symbol is constantly on the screen. Plugging into to a pc does nothing (not recognized by explorer or itunes). Multiple restarts haven't helped, I tried to get it to switch to disc mode without luck... It is currently plugged in to see if being fully charged will make a difference.

Anybody have some suggestions, or should I start looking for a replacement?

30gigs are pretty old aren't they? Might just finally be done and time for a new one.

take it to an apple store. they dont charge you anything to run a diagnostic. could be anything really, like the battery, hard drive, software, etc. if they say its bad, you might as well buy a new one - its not really worth it to repair such an old ipod (if its a 30GB video or previous).

Well if it wasn't dead before it is now. After taking it apart and reseating the hdd cable (worked for some people), I tried the less elegant drop it onto your desk/smack it on a countertop version of tech repair (also discussed all over the net and youtube). Somewhere along the way, I think I disrupted one of the leads in the battery ribbon cable as I have to plug the ipod in now to get the same stupid apple icon to show up.

Anywho, I'm trying to get my wife to decide between the touch, nano and zune hd...
Any other local favorites to consider?

Thanks for the input.

I went through a phase of buying the Gen 4 ipod (mono & photo) for this reason. I needed one for my car and it was and still is the cheapest way to get 60gb of storage for tunes.

- Buy 'broken' iPod on eBay
- Buy case opening tools for $1 at same time
- Open iPod
- Reseat HDD cables and tape the HDD end down with some Scotch Magic tape or similar so it never loosens again.
- Steal last persons tunes you like with Yamipod.

I've not had any of the 15 or so I fixed break or come back to me, as I sold some for up to 100% profit back onto eBay. :awe:
