Is My Western Digital 80g DEAD?! *HELP*

Well i have a really big problem. So the other day i decided to reformat my computer...and before i did this everything was working fine and dandy. Then i notice during the reformat process when Windows was being installed my Western Digital hdd started to sound a lot louder than it usually does.

So...i was like "hmm, maybe its just my imagination" but i had read reviews at newegg.com that this drive has the tendancy to fail on some. But i ignored the more obvious noises from the drive and went on with the installation.

So finally windows installed and i was at the main Windows desktop screen ready to install my mobo and video drivers. BUT i notice that everything is taking about 2 minutes to load when i double click on it.....and everytime i tried to install drivers from a cd...the installation took about 40 mins, files were just copying very slowly!

And all of a sudden some message popped onto my machine that said "This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off" And it gave me 1:00:00 to shutoff all my programs. It also said it was shutting off because of some problem with the RPC? Remote Protocal something..?

I was wondering if anyone knew if all these symptoms are related to my harddrive? Its a Western Digital 80G WD800JB. Everything on the comp is just runnign very slow and the mouse will stutter when you try and move it. I dont think it could be the processor....PLEASE HELP!

Sounds like it may be dead, but you should download and try running the diagnostic tool from Western Digital. They have it on their website.

EDIT: link to their download site.

also, is anyone sure that this isnt related to my processor? Because everything is just running rediculously slow...like if i click on a button or anything it'll have like a 20 second delay till it actually acknowledges i clicked it

cheetah...while running the WD Diagnostic tools, i found that whenever i run the "EXTENDED TEST" the window that says my computer is shutting down pops up and gives me 1:00:00 to shutdown the computer. It then says something about the "RPC" again, this has happened twice now at the same part in the test...would these all point to the sign that my beautiful WD 80G is dead?!🙁

you got the blaster.... make sure you arent online when in windows
how do you think your hd is dead if you can go into windows..?? If it was dead, it wouldn't tell you it was shutting down, lol, that's most definitely a blaster....reformat and try again.

High-
Is there anything I can do to prevent that damn blaster from getting on my comp when i plug in my ethernet cable? Because before i took your advice i tried reformatting 3 times (while i was still connected to MSU's T1) and always got that virus. How shall i prevent it?

BTW- so far ur way is working great..thank yoU!

Make sure you have a clean copy of the WD tools, downloaded from an uninfected machine (or use the CD that came with your drive), boot to a floppy or the CD, and do a complete low level format.

What's with the extreme measures? 🙂 Just download Microsoft's fix for the Blaster worm and install it. It's fairly small and the DL should complete before your system decides to shutdown again. Although the couple of times I have caught the Blaster it didn't result in a sluggish system, just the restart screen. Also search Symantec's site for the free Blaster cleaner (if they still offer it that is).
