Is my WD HDD dying ( or defective )? RMA help.

I bought a WD600 ( 60 gig ) harddrive back in September, and I'm having serious problems now.

The first sign of a problem occured a few weeks ago, when the drive started to make a fairly loud crackling/static noise, causing Windows to freeze. I tried hitting reset & power, but it didn't want to reboot or shut off. So I had to pull the plug. Once I got it to boot again, it would go into Windows, and Scan disk would start running. But it would just freeze at the beginning of the scan, and the drive would make that noise again. ( Even if I cancelled scan disk, it'll freeze ).

I rebooted, and popped in the WD data lifeguard disk, and checked it for errors by running the extended test. Surely enough, something was wrong with it and it gave a 4 digit error code ( and stated I should RMA it ).

Since I had some semi-important files there ( yeah, I didn't back up )... I tried installing the drive into another PC, where it would occasionally see the drive ( sometimes you can see the files on the drive, sometimes you can't ).

See, now comes the really messed up part. I formatted the drive through the other PC, ran WD Data life guard, and the errors were gone! BUT... the drive still occasionally makes that awful noise and freeze up Windows.

Now I have the drive installed back in the original PC, and at least once a day, it'll do its thing and freeze up Windows. Also, sometimes on boot up, it'll delay the POST, and the bios is unable to see the drive. Yet, the damn WD data lifeguard disk still says there are no errors on the disk.

I tried using a new ATA100 cable, and that didn't help... and I'm pretty sure it isn't the mobo ( intel 850 GBC ), as it can see and use other drives fine. I know I should RMA it... but since RMA requires the 4 digit error code from the disk utility ( I don't remember the 4 digit error number I got the first time I ran it ), what should I do? It says no errors now, but cleary something is wrong.

Also, the drive is much louder now... making a clicking/rattling noise when it seeks ( kinda like how old drives do ).

Well, yeah it's defective. If you can't get an error code from the WD software, just call up tech support and explain to them what you just wrote and they'll issue you an RMA # over the phone.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Any idea how long the RMA process takes with WD? I guess I should buy a cheap small capacity drive for the time being...

RMA that puppy, it's given up the ghost it seems. At least the ghost is on the way out.

It will probably take around a month or even more to get your new drive, unless of course you tell them it's for your buisness and has mission critical information on it, then maybe they'll get a new one out for you quicker.
