Is my video card supposed to be this bad?

Hey guys,

I got a evga geforce 6200 256mb (agp) from newegg. I thought it was nice and cheap and it work work well for me since it had 256mb and I don't play games at all really. Well, it seems to be a piece of crap. Things like resizing windows and such are choppy (especially iTunes), and things that should be smooth are choppy as well (for instance, when you expand a column on digg.com - this effect is always smooth on my laptop, but it is visually choppy on this computer). The funny thing is it doesn't seem to have a hard time rendering 3d stuff - it's nothing special but running things like Winamp visualizers and stuff full screen at higher resolutions aren't really an issue. Just the every day 2d stuff. It did this in XP and it's doing it in vista too. Should I have expected it to be this bad, or is my card defective? FWIW, I do run dual monitors at 1280x1024 if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help...

Dan

what kind of wierd dual setup do you have?

1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio.

What was your previous video card?

I meant 1280x1024 on both of the dual monitors. So 2560x1024.

Install the drivers from nVidia.

That'll solve the problem right there.

He can't run dual monitors (except cloning) without nView which comes with the driver, so it's safe to assume that he already installed the driver. Have none of you used dual monitors with nVidia cards?

Actually I had dual monitors running with the Windows drivers before and it worked fine. Not mirroring, 2 different displays. The nvidia driver seemed to help a little bit but it's still bad.

Well, to answer the actual question - no.

For example under Windows 2K I am running a 6200 with a Primary CRT at 1024X768 and another CRT at 800x600. Lower res than yours admittedly. 32 bit colour. The 2D stuff is virtually instantaneous. The processor is an athlon XP 2400+. I have 2GB of RAM. Forceware drivers version 91.31.

As I write this I have three simultaneous instances of EvE online running, this MS IE session and an excel spreadsheet. Switching between programs is virtually instantaneous.

I suggest it wouldn't hurt to check your video related BIOS settings. Thing like AGP 8X, and so on.

Could you problem be memory related? Apps to longer to switch around if there is a lot of paging going on.

The GF6200 (along with every other discrete video card produced in the last 15 years or so) can run pretty much any 2D application without a problem. If you are getting slowdowns when dragging windows, etc. either:

1) Your GPU/chipset drivers (or your DirectX installation) are screwed up.

2) Some process is eating up a lot of CPU time and causing everything to lag.

3) The GPU hardware is actually bad.

For #2, check Task Manager and make sure there isn't some processing using tons of CPU time or all your memory.

On new builds, sometimes things can get messed up if you install drivers in the wrong order. Usually what I recommend to fix this is:

Use Driver Cleaner to remove your graphics card and chipset drivers (follow the instructions included with the latest version).
Reinstall the latest (non-beta) chipset drivers.
Reinstall the latest DirectX.
Reinstall the latest (non-beta) graphics card drivers from NVIDIA (or the manufacturer of your video card). Don't use the ones that came on the CD with the card, as they are probably very old at this point.

Usually this fixes weird Windows issues with your graphics card. Also make sure that you have "hardware acceleration" set to "Full" under your desktop settings.

Thanks guys, great suggestions.

My CPU seems to be fine normally. Hovers at 4-6%. One thing I noticed though - resizing the task manager back and forth real fast causes the CPU to stay at almost 70%. That doesn't seem normal to me, but I don't know.

I'll have to try directx - I never installed anything, just assumed it was fine with whatever came with Vista or XP.

I should note that it isn't necessarily switching between applications, but rather when things are supposed to be smooth - that's where I notice it the most. For example I'm used to it being completely smooth when I resize a window, and the choppiness seems abnormal. It can also be seen, to a lesser extent, when dragging windows. It's just not completely smooth - it's visibly choppy. I don't know how else to describe it...

Edit: FWIW, I am currently using Vista with aero glass, but this happened in XP too. The funny thing is I would have expected it to be a whole lot worse in vista because of aero glass, but it's about the same level of choppiness.

Thanks again for the ongoing support...

Dan
