Is my video card fried?

I have a ATI 9800 AIW pro and yesterday while cleaning the area around the PC, I accidentally touched a few wires and the computer went off and came back on in a split second. After that the card began behaving funny and was telling me that ATI control panel was not installed. I restarted it and that was the end of it. It was not giving any signal to the monitor at all. I opened the PC up and found that the wire connecting the video card to the supply was slightly brown on one edge (burned) I bought a new cable and tried connecting the video card again but still no response. Any idea of what was wrong and how to remedy it?

About the only advice I can offer you is to try the card in a different computer. You could have damaged the mobo too. Whenever cleaning in, on or around your computer SHUT it off.

Well said.

NEVER EVER EVER DO ANYTHING INSIDE YOUR PC WHEN THE POWER IS ON!!!

My instincts say that the card may be fried, but I would definitely try it in a different computer, as you COULD have fried the mobo.

When you say "cleaning" - what sort of device, if any, were you using? Cleaning computers with a vacuum, requires a special anti-static cleaning head/vacuum. Normal ones apparently build up a static charge. If you touched it to some parts in your computer, well, you might just have to kiss them bye-bye. Hopefully you've learned your lesson.

Edit: Wait, you weren't cleaning inside the computer, only around the PC? And you bumped it? It flashed off, and later you opened it up and discovered a burned video card power cable connector? Sounds like: 1) the connector may have been only loosely attached in the first place, and 2) bumping the PC jarred it loose, and 3) it didn't make proper contact with all of the wires, and shorted/fried something. Result? Card is likely somewhat toast.

Ouch, yeah, I think it fried......... Are you using a qaulity PSU or some pos one? Who knows what you did when cleaning the case, you should seriously just buy one of these next time.

I am using an Enermax PSU. I havent had the time to try another video card on the PC but I am going to try it today. And yeah it was pretty stupid of me to try to clean the area around the PC when it was on 🙁
