Is my TV borked?

Well this morning I turned on the old tube and was greeted to this:

pic1
pic2
pic3

Don't mind the glare and visual artifacts from the flash in the first two pics. Only the bottom half of the display is showing anything, and what should be appearing on the top half is kind of warped and displayed upside down (easiest to see in the third pic). The TV was manufactured in 1994 so it's not really that old, though not exactly new either. Anything I can try doing at this point, or is it time to look for a new TV?

[no offense] You have the same POS Magnavox TV that my GF has, and it's starting to go, too. You bought cheap and that's what you got; exactly what you paid for. Bone up the cash and go buy a real TV. I am amazed it's lasted this long.[/no offense]

No offense taken. I know it's a cheapo TV. Girlfriend brought it with her when we moved in together and to be honest we don't really watch that much TV, so we've been ok with it the whole time.

If it turns out we need a new TV I think I'll probably jump on this 27" Apex flatscreen deal from Circuit City.

So, you're going to make the same mistake you made the first time, huh?

Well with the amount of TV that we watch (or lack thereof) we're not really going to spend more than $200-300 on a 27" TV. If you can find us something "good" in that price range that we can buy within a week or two, we're all ears. 🙂

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would've sworn I read that Apex is a rebranded Samsung? 😕

Yeah I've read in numerous HD threads that their TVs are rebadged Samsungs, I don't know for sure though. But I'm pretty certain Apex doesn't manufacture anything themselves, everything they sell seems to be a rebadged something-or-other (most notably their DVD players). And then there are other companies that rebadge their stuff even. 😕

A question: Why are you limiting yourself to a 27" TV? Is that the max size your entertainment center can hold or something like that?

Nice 32" TVs can be found for maybe $100-$150 more...the diff b/t a 27 and a 32" is quite noticeable. 🙂

Buy a Sony VVega KV-36XBR400. It's literally the best entertainment investment my parents have ever done. Paired with a progressive scan DVD player and a 500 watt DD/DTS surround-sound system, there's really nothing I'd rather do when I'm at home then pop in Top Gun and make some popcorn.

Buy a good TV. You won't regret it.

It looks a lot like this TV.

My old high school bought a ton of crappy 27" TVs and put one in every room. This was like 3-4 years ago and at least 2 of them do this every month. The tube just fries from being on 24/7 or smth.

Another vote for buying Wega!

Sorry guys, we're not gonna shell out for a Wega or anything. 😛 They are nice however, parents have a 36" non-HD Wega and it's quite a beast. We really don't watch enough TV to merit getting something large or expensive, it would only serve to be a very expensive (and very heavy) paperweight. I think our guests/friends probably watch our TV more than we do. We're also in kind of a cash crunch for the next 6-12 months or so which doesn't help. We can't just not get a TV either though, because we do watch certain shows regularly once or twice a week.

Oh well, I guess we should be happy it lasted as long as it did. Honestly if we got another 27" that lasted another 8+ years for $200ish we'd be more than satisfied. Now to find out if a local Walmart has that Apex in stock so I can go about getting a pricematch. 😀

The 27" Apex at Walmart is not a rebadged Samsung. The 27" Akai at Sam's Club is. I have the Akai, and it's a great TV. Highly recommended.

And as far as the Magnavox TV goes, yep it looks screwed. I have one of those as a bedroom TV, and it's served it's purpose well for the past 8 years or so. Definitely worth the cheap price.

I dont think that isnt a great deal for an Apex. I got a 27" Panasonic Tau flat screen for less than $250 in april.

i got a free 19 inch GE last month and it started doing the EXACT same thing last week.. expect mine is the whole screen with a bright line in the middle.. if i shut off the tv for like 5 minutes it stops.. its just annoying i guess.. for free the tv was been great, its even stero and has AV inputs in the back 🙂.. i guess i cant complain
