Is my trackpad broken? delayed response

My sister just asked me to fix her laptop, since its all virused up and whatnot.

In windows the trackpad would have a delayed response when using it. You would put your finger on it and move it, but it takes a second to "wake up"

I figured this was just a virus or some windows related issue, so i tried booting into a linux livecd, but the same issues persisted. I can only assume this is a hardware issue right?

I'm having her just use a mouse for now, but is this fixable? any idea of what could be causing it?

The laptop model is an Asus F3KA

How old is it and when was the last time (if ever) it was taken apart and thoroughly cleaned of dust? Could be a overheating problem if the fan is jammed with dust, plus the viruses! How bad are they?

Its probably around 4 years old, and has never been taken apart.... its a laptop. I have blew dust out of the exhaust fan but thats it.

and the viruses are not in play here as the problem still persisted when booting into linux.

I don't see how overheating could be causing the problem.....

Re-install the drivers would be my first step. If that fails open it up and chean it out. Warranty is up, can't hurt unless you use a hammer to open the case.

Most notebooks have a BIOS setting to enable/disable the trackpad. Inspect the BIOS for available settings. If enable/disable are available, then you might try setting to boot disabled, then reboot with the setting back to enabled.

As a last resort, clear CMOS and restart.
