I tried installing ubuntu once and it ended up sitting at installer screen so i figured it was the chipset or something. I want to dual boot linux and windows xp pro what is the best way to do that? and what distro should i get? Is there anything close to mac os x? sorry had to ask :-D

my system is in my sig.

North Bridge ATI XPRESS 200
South Bridge ULi 1573

My ULi chipset drivers were supported (I have a different chipset though). I think it might be something else. I would recommend installing Suse linux. I didn't mind fixing Ubuntu, but Suse's never given me any critical problems.

I've never used OSX, but I'm sure there are OSX themes for KDE and Gnome. Or does XFCE4 resemble OSX in any way?

I actually decieded that it shouldnt matter if it looks like mac os x it's a different os ubuntu looks nice and ive seen some themes they look nice also. are you dual booting? I only have one hd so i'd have to use partion magic to partion them or something.

Get a Knoppix Live CD or other (Suse/SimplyMepis) live cds and test your hardware configuration - if Knoppix loads and works most distributions will install fine. Note Knoppix or other live cds require the boot order to be CD>then HD, and do not change your hd files.

Knoppix-STD is a 'Security Tools Distribution'..

It's basicly a modified knoppix version specificly designed for hackers and system administrators. It includes virus scanners, reset administration passwords for windows, penitration testing tools, network scanners, and stuff like that.

If you want to try out a Knoppix version for evaluating it as a Desktop OS you'd want the regular Knoppix version.

http://www.knoppix.org/

They have DVD versions, CDROM versions and English (EN) and German (DE) versions. Be sure to choose what is right for yourself.

Bittorrent links are aviable at http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/

Now if you wanted the security tool variation, that's fine. I just want to make sure that you weren't confused and got the STD version by mistake.

Well, it's still considered knoppix's with some added programs correct? I was under the impression it was better still it's a live cd and should be able to tell if it's compatible.

edit: I already have it dl'd all I have to do is burn it and boot to cd see if it runs.

Sure go ahead and try it, it's not going to hurt anything and it's fun thing to play around with.

Keep in mind that it's not designed as a desktop system so it's not going to be nearly user-friendly as regular Knoppix. There is only so much room on a cdrom and they removed a lot of stuff to make way for all the security tool additions. Also it may be a bit dated compared to the latest Knoppix versions.

hmm, If this doesnt work i'll try the normal knoppixs and than if that works I want to try ubuntu again I think.

My P2 has Ubuntu. Easy install and no problem with drivers. Switched FC4 to another machine. All hardware found drivers with no difficulty.
Not as fast as my A64 rig, but I just wanted to see why Ubuntu was so hot with Linux users. It's great for beginners because, one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to use it. I use my FC4 more now than Ubuntu, but it was interesting to play around with Ubu.
