Is my sound card dead?

Here's the story: I disabled the onboard sound, installed the sound card, and plugged in my speakers and joystick. Windows 98 recognized it and asked for drivers. I told it where to look, it found them and installed them - everything went very smoothly. The sound was great, for about 10 minutes. Right in the middle of a racing simulator, the sound and joystick control vanished. I uninstalled the card and reinstalled - no good. I downloaded new drivers from Hercules and installed them - no good. I checked for IRQ conflicts - didn't find any. The Device Manager has a little yellow "!" next to the card and says the card isn't functioning properly. Have I missed anything or is the card dead? Thanks in advance for any help. RB
