Is my sound card dead? If so what to replace it with.

I have been using a Hercules game theater xp for about 5+ years. My son was playing games on nick last night and all of a sudden the sound sort of crackled and then dropped out. I played with it a bit and determined it was not just for his game, no sound at all. I restarted and still nothing. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them, still nothing. I didn't notice in the device manager that it is listing a crystal sound fusion as the sound card. Where as it used to list it as something else, so I am guessing the drivers are having an issue. I plan to continue troubleshooting today, by messing with the drivers, and reseating the card, maybe in another slot. Any other suggestions?

If the card is done(which I wouldn't be terribly surprised, like I said it's 5+ years old)what should I get to replace it? I have an Asus A8N-VM CSM, which has what they call high definition onboard audio, but I have never used it, so no idea how good it is. What are the other good sound cards. I know creatives X-fi gets all the press, and thats fine, nothing against them, but what else is out there?

Do a google search yet??

Just checking - you sure it's the soundcard that died and not the speakers?

If you have decent onboard to try, might as well start with that instead of going out and buying something right away.

What kind of speakers are you using? I would have a hard time recommending a $60-$80 soundcard if your speakers are only a $40 set or something.

Yeah the sound card came unseated a bit, problem solved. I am using a stereo shelf system as my speakers. Its a pretty decent set, but not really computer speakers.

I have a harmony 880 and it works fine for me. I've been too lazy to set it back up now that I've changed some of my equipment lately.

The only thing on your list that I'm not sure about is your PC. Do you have some kind of remote for your PC already and you'd have the harmony replace it? At least my 880 didn't come with any hardware and software to interact with a PC on its own to control it.

I have an ATI remote wonder, but its RF. Did ou get the 880 in the dell deal? Or how much did it cost you. I am leaning towards a harmony, just not sure which one.

I got it quite a while ago before the deals were out. I paid less than average at the time but it wasn't nearly as good as the more current deals.

All the remotes I've been replacing have been IR remotes. If you need to replace a RF remote, you might need to get the 890?

Yeah I think thats a bit out of my price range. I suppose I will have to just deal with having that extra remote for my itunes
