one of our computers was not working today. it had a sign on it that said "broken" and it said "video card" underlined beneat that. so i turned it on to see what was happening and it beeped 3 times and nothing displayed on the screen. i didnt think that it was the video card, i told our schools technician that it might be the psu or the RAM as i had a problem with the same symptoms once. he said "doubt it" and walked off.

opinions???

The beeps tell you what is wrong. If you know the motherboard inside the computer, then you can decode the beeps...

yep.
qualifies for either stupid or lazy in my book. Maybe both as they certainly do go hand in hand.

I know at least for AMI bios boards 3 beeps is base 64k RAM failure.

1 long and 2 short beeps = video failure. This is 3 beeps also. So he may be right.

another video failure is = 1 long 3 short

Haha who cares he's getting paid to be the technician. Nice of you to turn it on when it said broken. Must be one of those that has to touch something when it says do not touch.

Is it his job to troubleshoot and fix it? If not, who cares? Whoever has to fix it will turn it on and decide if it's really the video card or not. Of course, if it's got integrated video, it's probably impossible for it to be the video card. :)

Unambitious is probably the proper description. No display = bad video card to him, and he doesn't need to bother trying to make sure.

You see, youve got it all wrong....school technicians are paid to sit at their desk and read email and browse the web..not actually work!! are you crazy, work? I tried to impart some info to a couple of our school techs about the new dells they got, and how they were set up incorrectly (i used to work at dell) and they were too busy to care...cnn.com clearly wasnt going to be there in a couple of minutes..

Hell nick, you are in school and you showed an interest, he should have at least taken a few seconds and talked to you listened and maybe explained why he thought it was a video card error. It is school afterall.

He's just a student, so he can't know what he's talking about. Just like me at Walmart - I stock shelves, so of course the manager wouldn't listen to me when there was a mouse problem on one of the PC's - the pins were badly bent on the PS/2 connector and I told him that it will not go in if they are bent. So he tried harder to push it into the port. I'm just a stocker, so I must be as intelligent as the boxes I open.

Hey Nick in all seriousness you did the right thing. You'll learn more as you get older about unambition and politics and budgets. The technician seems like an fool to me anyways. Either he's too uninterested in taking care of the problem or he's milking his job. Either way it's not an example you want to follow.

As for you Jeff7, maybe it's time to look into something besides stocking shelves. Seems your brain could be beter used elsewhere and for more money. Start looking for computer tech apprenticeships. Even intern rates are better then stockboy.

Yea most school techs (esp. < highschool) are dumb as rocks. All they know how to do it plug the comps in and pop in a ghost disc.
