Is my router working or not? HELP !!!

I just purchased a new D-Link DI-704 router. I have AT&T cable internet, which runs into a cable modem, then plugs into the rear input of the router, then a CAT5 cable patches from the front of the D-Link into my computer's NIC. I run ZoneAlarm version 2.6.

I expected that I wouldn't be getting alerts reported by ZoneAlarm. I thought the router is supposed to block my computer from being pinged. However, within a few hours I had over 60 alerts. Judging by the IP addresses displayed in the alerts, some were from D-Link, but I don't know what the others were about.

Is my router working? Did I set something wrong? Should I keep ZoneAlarm? I was hoping to turn off the software since it uses up precious resources on my old AMD K6-350.

Any help would be much appreciated.

By the way, the router would have been simple to hook up if D-Link hadn't included any documentation. I spent more time reading their garbage, which made things sound extremely difficult. Unfortunately, I can't get any tech support from them.

I am about to hook up a Cable/router .... is this typlical?

go to grc.com and use "shields up" and when u get to probe my ports most of them should be stealth if not then the router is not working properly and you are just using a software firewall if it says closed which would be zone alarm. This is a nice web place for testing the finished installation.
You didn't say where the alerts were comming from they might have been from port 80 which might be normal for intrusion on cable networks.

Okay, I used Shields Up to "test my shields" and "probe my ports." I found these tests at the following web page: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 .

With ZoneAlarm engaged, every port was in stealth mode, except port 113 (ident), which was closed. An explanation in an FAQ convinced me that this isn't a problem.

Just to make sure that the results weren't merely the result of the ZA firewall, I disabled ZA and ran the tests again. I got the same results. Sounds like I am secure.

I am still wondering if I should now disable ZoneAlarm.?.?.? Comments, please.

Uh oh. Problems. I just tried LeakageTester 1.1 that I downloaded from the GRC.com website. I flunked the leakage test when ZoneAlarm was disabled, which means that the firewall was penetrated, which is bad.

When I started up ZA, the leakage tester utility was unable to connect to the internet, which is good. When I allowed leakage tester to pass through ZA, which verified that the test is valid.

So, does this mean that I must continue to use ZoneAlarm????
Also, does this indicate an inherent problem with the router or my particular setup???????

You still should use ZoneAlarm if you are concerned about spyware programs getting out and accessing the internet.

the leak test is about transmissions getting out of your computer. For example you were already infected and you were being used for some reason. See leaktest notes. As for say Windows XP who knows what is being sent out. As for other programs that bounce a signal out weekly to see if updates are available ummm... real audio does that and you have to approve that with zone alarm.
To put it another way a router with a firewall means that your computer never has to deal with signals/probes ... on Stealth Ports. You would have port 80 open so someone could ping you for denial of service. Buffer overruns in IE patch needs to be applied NOW, also if you use M$ XP disable UPnP in 'services'. As for other M$ versions I don't remember concerning UPnP (this is networking not the PnP slots on the computer.)

Best regards,
