Is my refurbished radeon 9700pro defective?

I finally got my refurbished radeon 9700 pro from newegg.com com today. After reformatting windows and testing it out, I thought the card worked great(14363 in 3d mark 2001, 4838 in 2003). BUt after a couple minutes of use I noticed that sometimes the display would become corrupted for a few seconds, and then the corruption would go away. It happens both in Windows and in games. Is my card defective or are there any settings I can change (like AGP speed, fastwrites, drivers settings, ect...) that can make this problem go away (I'm running in AGP 8X with fastwrites). I still have the card unde warrenty so I can still return it, but I don't want to go through the trouble if theres a simple way to fix the problem

You could try bumping the AGP voltage up in BIOS.
Btw when you disable fastwrites ensure you do it in both BIOS and ATI Smartgart tab.

Btw try it in another PC,if you get same problem I would return it for a replacement.

I just noticed something on my card. I took it out and look at the back of the card and it says Radeon 9700 128M, instead of radeon 9700 pro 128M. Is it possible that this card is actually a normal 9700 and someone replaced the bios with a 9700 pro bios. Is this possible or does all 9700s (pro and nonpro) have the same sticker?

I can't really answer your question, but I do know that you are getting Radeon 9700 PRO speeds based on your result from 3DMark2001 & 2003. I have pretty much the same setup as you and getting very similar results.

it sounds like u got a flashed 9700. the higher clock speeds of pro could be causing instability. dude, that's why buying refurbished might not be such a good idea after all.

if it's flashed then there's no way you can tell apart from the sticker. if it's a pro, it WILL say pro. in windows and all other things however it will say 9700 Pro and will even perform like one (slightly slower, but you can't tell)

i know because a friend of mine had a 9600. it was flashed to a 9600 Pro and he sold it without anyone even knowing. made a nice profit on it too cause the person paid for a pro and got a 9600 NP @ pro speeds. this is very possible. i would seriously take it back and request a refund while u still can.

My friend had a 9800 pro and had similar problems. Tried it in my PC and it did the same, so i think you should do the same first. Try it in another pc and if it does the same thing return it. My friend got a brand new 9800 from ATI since it was defective.

I got a refurbished 9600 pro from newegg and the thing gives me big blue artifacts everywhere. Im pretty sure half the refurb cards they sell dont even work.

yeah i plan on returning it now. thanks for the responses.

The reason it's refurbished is because some nutter tried to overclock it too far and blew it up. Mine was this way also.

did u rma it or ask for a replacement? I did an RMA repair cause I heard they give you new ones if the refurbished ones didn't work (or if they gave you the wrong product, like me).

I get 151xx in 3dmark 2001 with a radeon 9700 non pro, I'm not sure but try Rage 3D Tweak to check your card core and mem speed !
Seems to me u have a non pro card but again I'm not sure !
