Is my PSU killing the rest of my system?

Seems to me I am having an inordinate amount of untimely deaths for one PC.

In the last month I lost a WD drive and a Crucial DDR stick. Another WD drive died 6 months ago. All components were about 1yr old.

Is this a bad PSU / motherboard issue, or am I getting paranoid and this is just a coincidence?

Hard to say. You might have bad luck, but you could also have a bad power supply or even bad wiring causing the problem.

If you suspect your wiring, they do sell power thingies to correct. I can't remember what they are called, I haven't tried looking for them in about 4 years.

So now I have to have a UPS to keep my PC safe?

Not really, there were some protectors out there such as monstercable that could work. However if you have bad wiring in your house or apartment, it might not help too much.

Do you use a surge protector now? If so what brand?

What is your power supply?

Any other problems with electronics in the past?

Really need to give all your info.

OK, here's some info:

This PC is the only one in my bedroom. It is on an APC SurgeArrest surge protector.

The mobo is Shuttle AK31 v3.1

The PSU is a generic 300W, came with the case. Here's what I could pull from the PSU:

SH 300W HPC 300.101, ATX 2.03
and some power specs (peak current)
+5V 25A, +3.3V 16A, +12V 10A, -5V 0.5A, -12V 0.5A, +5Vsb 2A.

I have never been a big fan of generic power supplies, because you never know what kind of quality they are (if any quality at all)

I would get a name brand power supply first. If you have problems after that, I would check your wiring in your house or apartment.

Like Wolfsraider stated, make sure all your network PC's are not all one circuit.

I really don't want to go flipping circuit breakers, perhaps a little later.

I found some info on the power supply HPC 300.101 here. Does anyone know anything about these? On the other hand, my actual PSU does not look like that one. But the case shown is the right one. Maybe they used to brand their PSU's differently. Bloody mistery power supplies.

Edit: found it! My PSU and my case. It was right here all along. Apparently the reviewer mentioned the cooling was pretty bad.

This drives are mounted in the regular bracket, where HD's normally go. Could they have been overheating?
