Is my PS3 controller kaput?

Believe it or not I did read the manual. When I plug it in all four lights flash on it. If I hit the PS3 button while plugged in the controller #2 light blinks, as it is indeed #2. I even reassigned it to #3 and back to #2 so it looks like it's joined properly.

But as soon as I unplug it from the USB cable the lights go out and if I push the PS button on the controller, nothing. I even hit the reset button on the controller a few times.

Does this just mean the battery is dead? I didn't use this controller much at all. It works normally when attached with the cable and I've let it charge all day.

When you let it charge all day was the PS3 left on (green light)?

Even if you are playing with the controller plugged in I believe it should still charge, so maybe your battery is indeed dead. How old is the controller?

I guess it's about 2 years old. It was hardly ever used and probably not charged for over a year. It was my second controller so rarely used.

Battery is dead. I got a new controller last week and I had to leave it plugged in until it got a full charge (or close to it) before I could use it wirelessly.
