ok here the problem. when i assembled my computer in January i had no idea about PSUs so i just bought a 400W one from a local retailer. i do not even know its model number.

here are the things i can tell you about it.
its says model: vento 3600 (searching google tell me this is actually a case by asus but no PSU)
+5V : 30 A
+12 V : 12 A
+3.3 V :26 A
SB+ 5V :2 A
-5V :0.5 A
-12 V :0.8 A

please help[. my knowledge of PSU is severely limited.

ok then. i suppose that rules out the possibility of a x1800xt. would a 7600gt work on this PSU. also is there a way i can measure the voltage current on the 12V rail.

This is a good site that should help you pick out an appropriate psu.

Also look at enhance psu's from ewiz. They make psus for silverstone, among others. I just got a 0560g from them and its sweet.

I wouldn't use that powersupply at all with that motherboard. You are much better with getting a new one. In my opinion a good powersupply is essential. If it goes out so could all of your other components so better to spend some money on a good one istead of a whole new rig. I have the OCZ powerstream which is a bit expensive I would take the advice of broly8877 a good fortron would set you right plus their cheap as far as good powersupplies go.

Aye, the powerstream is nothing but a rebadged fortron. All you spend the extra money on is the ocz name.

like this silverstone reviewed here is nothing but the <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=PS-EN0560G&c=fr&pid=1e39bde240f9fa7533d
<b">0560g</a>. But the enhance is ~ $50 cheaper :)

I'm using a Fortron 400W PSU with the components listed in sig...it's working very well and is very quiet. The 450W version of the same PSU would power a single X1800XT nicely, although if you are wanting to get a very high end PSU you may want too look at 500+ watt units from Fortron and Enermax, along with Silverstone and the like.

Tis true that OCZ has a rebadged fortron but it is the GameXStream not the powerstream

Sorry absolutely NO possible way that psu will run a 7900gt in that system, even if the best psu maker in the world made a psu with only 12a on the +12v it wouldnt run. Especially with that system, i honestly dont even know how your getting by with an x800gt. Go with something around 450-500w of power with at least 28amps on the 12v. That way you'll be safe even if you OC you opteron or your gpu.

thanks guys. i had no idea i was in such a bad shape. i'll try to find a fortron 400W PSU where i live (pakistan). too ad i can't just get it from newegg. maybe when i go to UofT (canada)

edit :after thought.
guys is there anyway to measure the current oin the 12 V. i think maybe its incorrectly listed cuz the 300W version is supposed to have 18 A on the 12 V.

THANKS

edit 2.
ok i found this nice link.
http://www.jonnyguru.com/atx/index.html

mine is a 20 pin supply.
the guy says
To test the power supply, you can do this: Unplug the power connector from the motherboard. Connect the green and black wires on the power connector with a paper clip or a piece of wire. This will energize the power supply. Now, using a multimeter, the 12V should read 12V, the 5V should read 5V and the 3.3V should read 3.3V (within +/- 5% per Intel specifications.)

suppose if i were to get a multimeter would it be possible to read the current through the 12 rail. would that current be the max possible ?

yeah, get a new psu b4 it blows up and ruins all your components. I'd recommend an enhance 5150gh from ewiz. Easily enough for a 7900gt, even volt modded, not to mention an oced cpu and a couple hard drives.

NO!
That is very dangerous. You are not supposed to connect a current meter to the output of a voltage source. That is like shorting the output, which can cause a spark to fly and possibly cause lots of damage and even possibly bodily injury!

really. OH crap . iweas about to try it out. THANKS.
well i guess i'll just rely on p95 and 3d mark 06 and atitool to see if my PSU is enough for the moment. i'll definatly get a new one when i upgrade to a 7900gt.

what system do you have?

depending on it get a quality 450-500 watts or higher.
Consider Fortron and OCZ as well.
