Is my power supply bad?

This is my first time building my system so this could be part or all of the problem. After I had installed all of the components; mb, cpu, hard drive, ps, and drives I was ready to start it up for the first time. I checked all my connections and when I turned the power supply on nothing happened, so I tried another outlet but still nothing happened. So I checked everything again to make sure that everything was connected and still nothing happened. Finally I disconnected everything from my ps and took it out of the case. I plugged it into the wall and turned it on and nothing happened, no fans running or anything. Which leads me to my question. Shouldn't the ps run even though its not connected to the motherboard. I know that after the first time you boot up the ps can be turned off by the soft switch but initally I would think that it would come on even if not connected to anything. You help is greatly appreciated. antec true power 430, a7n8x deluxe, and 2500 barton.

A power supply will not "turn on" by just plugging it into the wall. A power supply should only be turned on by using the button on your computer case which sends a signal to the motherboard which in turn sends a signal to the power supply.

yeah, initally I used the switch on the ps and after I took it out of the case but nothing happened. And I had also checked to make sure the case switch was hooked up to the mb correctly.
Thanks for the suggestions

The powersupply needs to be under a load as well. You need to hook up a hard drive or something to it.

To check the powersupply without it hooked up to the motherboard, you'll also need to simulate the case on-off signal by shorting the green wire on the power connector with one of the black ones using a paper clip or something similar.

I found the problem. I had the power switch connect to the wrong pins on the control panel on the mb. Dumb newbie :)
Thanks for the help.
