Wow!! Okay, more responses...this is great!! Alright, well I'm back on the fence again now and maybe I'll just do the upgrade instead of a whole new system.

Thanks again for all of the info you guys are putting out here. Like I said, I'm learning a lot in this discussion so I appreciate everybody's feedback.

If I could just upgrade the video card and nothing more for the next 6-9 months that would be my first choice.

Thanks again...

Hmm... if you are jonesing for a new machine, save for a few more months until you have 1500 bucks. You could buy almost top of the line hardware for all of your major components witht hat much. I'm not syaing your gonna get into fx 57 or 60 territory, but you could probably pick up a 4400+, 1gb of decent ddr 400, a x-fire extreme music, an nvidio 7800gt or ATX1800, and a decent mobo for that price. You can use your old cd/dvd drive, case, etc.. from your old machine.

That was just if he decided to stick with his original Motherboard.

If you're talking to me, I'm just telling him his first choice is do-able and IMHO will meet his objectives.

OK, but at what cost?

$150. Jeez, look at the card he's been using. A used 9800p for $90 would prolly blow his mind.

Yes its upgradeable, but you could also renew all the important parts that. Its about self control really, if your like me and have absolutely none at all :) then you will buy the new parts and be happy with that, however if you wish to save some cash and will be happy with the older system + some newish parts then go for it. Or do what patent suggested and go for top of the line, i did that.

For getting into gaming, i would go with a cheapish A64 system

Buy a 6600GT or preferably a 6800GS... he'll be able to play pretty much everything with average or better settings. No new system, no crazy setups, no problems. Simple, easy, cheap and does what the OP asked, and for fairly cheap... that's all I'm saying... my suggestion matches the original question.

 The 6600GT is all you need to meet your requirements.
