Is my onboard audio dying?

Posted this in computer help, but no one replied, so I'm hoping I can get some help, here:

I have this motherboard: http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_I...YgK&templete=2 (Asus M2NPV-VM). If I restart my computer, or accidentally bump the wire on my headphones, I get a pop-up from the audio software (jack sensing) asking me 'what do you have plugged in the green jack'. I set it to headphones, then click 'ok', then it tells me that i have my headphones in the wrong jack, and that I need to plug them into the green jack. The headphones ARE in the green jack... I looked carefully to make sure. So.... does this mean the audio on my motherboard is dying? I've tried another pair of headphones.. same result.

Check your channel configuration. If you have it set for 6 channel, that green port is not for headphones, but for Front Speaker Out. It is for Headphones only if you have it set for 4 channels. IOW, you can't use headphones for 6 channel config.

Thank you, corkyg!... I will check the channel configuration.

corkyg - I used the wizard thing to set up my audio. My speakers are set to "stereo headphones". Still have the same problem. There are no new drivers available, but I did try re-installing the current drivers to no avail. Also, the audio sounds like it's lower in volume on the right side than on the left. I've checked the balance.... everything is ok there. I'm just wondering if this means the audio is about to poop out. If it is, I'd like to start looking at some sound cards. Can't do without my music on my computer! lol

By the way, this is the onboard audio I have (copied from Everest):

It sounds like that jack itself is crapping out. Can you assign the jacks to different functions via the driver? If so, just set another jack to Headphone and/or Line Out and see if that works better.

mfenn -- I'm not sure if I can assign the jacks to different functions via the driver, but I will try and report back. Thanks! 🙂

Ok, I've looked and there is no way to re-task my audio jacks through the software. I was looking around & saw registry hacks to re-task jacks.. but those were for the Realtek audio. Mine is ADI. In any case, are there any registry changes or third party software that I can use to re-task the jacks? I'm pretty sure the answer is 'no', but I wanted to ask, just in case. Looks like I'm going to be buying a soundcard soon.. arg

Yeah, I doubt a registry hack for a Realtek will work with an ADI. Sorry to hear that you can't reassign the jacks though. 🙁
