It's a Plextor px-712, fw 1.09, 3 years old. It reads and burns dvd's fine, reads audio cd's fine, but totally chokes on cd-r. perpetual spinning. is there any hope?

ps- i'm torn between hunting down a badly needed SATA drive, and not spending a damn penny.
 
You sure it ain't some queer incompatability or bad disc(s)? ROM update? Importing a SATA drive could be pricey versus a $10 adapter. Major manufacturers are apparently still using bridge chips anyway.
