Is my northwood dying a slow death??

I got a 3.0C northwood 30 capper SL6WK OEM chip from this forum, great chip, I used it with a XP-90 and 92mm panaflo fan, with 1.55V (asus p4p800, default vcore is like 1.475) I could run it 250fsb so 3.75ghz no problem with a ram divider, no crashes, primes with no problem etc.

Then comes the evil part. I had to test out a few other CPUs lately, so comes to remove that f***** XP-90, and every time (3 times already) it ripps my CPU right OUT OF THE SOCKET and very often with bent pins. I had to correct it with a sharp knife a few times. Now when I even run the CPU at stock speed and stock vcore, it will prime and do superPi alright, but whenever I play NFS: UG2, a few mins into the race, the whole game would simply FREEZE like there's no tmrw!!!

btw, in between, I've changed ram a few times, (from tccd, to BH-5 to utt bh-5 to micron-g ballistix now). and the very last time I installed my CPU, it was quite difficult as the pins didn't fit exactly and I had to give it a little bump to tuck it into the socket.

The rest of my system is as follows:
3.0C SL6WK
P4p800 with one of the late bios
Crucial ballisitx 2X512mb PC3200 Cas2
seagate 200gb and maxtor 80gb
dvd rom and CD-RW
6800GT with NV5 + 77.75 (slightly OCed to 400/1100, no problem in HL2 or SC CT)
Enermax noisetaker 475W
coolermaster Praetorian case
Windows XP pro

btw again, I checked my disks for errors, no problem there, same for ram, no problem either. Do i have a bad OS or is my northwood experiencing slow death?? fakkk that pissses me off bad.

Any help and suggestions will be really appreciated. Thank you.

Ouch, man, that doesn't sound good and that would piss me off mightily as well... that is reason to use that other grease rather than Artic Silver, it evidently doesn't bond like that. I have done exactly what you have described with some A64's before, and I always now twist the heatsink to break the seal first now...

How do you let it run prime??? It doesn't sond like CPU persay...can it do 3.75ghz at all now....Anything else change?? PSU??? have evrything power wise plugged to the vid card and mobo??

Prime95 is more stressful to the cpu then BF2 is so that is why I am perplexed...

I don't know how to run 2 instance of Prime, so I only run 1 instance. I'll try reset the CMOS jumper this evening when I get home, since I swapped ram a few times.

btw, the game isn't BF2, it's Need for Speed, Under Ground 2.

and what thermal grease would you guys recommend now?? cause AS5 is like a cement.

Only thing changed recently is ram. Maybe I'll try to put them into the blue slots instead of the black slots.

also 1 other thing is my mobo, when I run like prime and other stuff, the vcore dropps a lot!! like if I set it to 1.55V, it'll drop all the way back to 1.47V, should I try to droop mod?

Maybe a reinstall of NFSUG2?? Cause when I run Splinter cell Chaos Theory and HL2 I had like no problems at all. so Go figure I guess. fakkk.

Yes you wont to gently twist back and forth before any lifting up....Now by twisting it should be not very forceful and like a very short tuen each direction to break the suction....then and only then pull up...Do not twist and pull up at same time...

It's not likely that the CPU is damaged, especialy if it's only crashing in a game. Have you tried backing the overclock of of your 6800GT? The 77.77 Nvidia drivers are out also, so maybe time to update the drivers just to see if it helps. It's also possible that with the switching of the ram around previously, if one stick was even slightly bad or incompatible it could have corrupted some files.

Poer supply and power issues are some of the most difficult to diagnos....I usually try all the easy fixes first and wait until I have to start replaces more expensive parts before I try that.....

I am sure it is not the cpu, and even more so now that certain games have issue...That being said the power supply may not likely be the issue then either.....

Look at vid card, drivers, running memtest in windows (yes there is a version)....

A friend of mine had a similar issues with sudden poor performance and crashing in games... switched power supplies and presto-chango, fixed.

If you think it is funny to try a different power supply, you must not have ever experienced a spotty one. They are difficult to diagnose like Duvie said, and it isn't hard to hook one up outside the case and try whatever is crashing your computer. It isn't the first thing I try, but it is far from the last...

run 3dmarks in loops (if this thing freezes, drop vcard oc, try diff drivers)

use the OCZ thermal compound...it is much "thinner" and pretty comparable to AS5...its a very nice thermal compound if you take your HSF off from time to time...

reset CMOS, and reseated the ram, now back up @ 3.75ghz!! everything runs perfectly fine except NFS UG2, so guess what, i'm gonna reinstall that suka and give it another go.

btw, what are the chances that i can run 2.5-2-2-5 at ddr500 with 2.85V with my ballistix 3200??

My AXP 1700+ system seemed like it was dying. CPU didnt OC anymore, random crashes, reboots, failures to post. Popped in a new PSU and she was back to normal.

I'm only adding what I've read about the issue, although I've experienced a difficulty with a mobo from EBay that seemed to confirm my suspicions.

One of the drawbacks of going from socket-478 to LGA775 was that the LGA775 motherboard socket was only good for some limited number of CPU replacements. Of course, your P4P800, like mine, is a socket-478. But the greater longevity of the socket-478 retention mechanism assumed that you didn't yank the processor from the mobo before the retention-lever had been released.

I've discovered that when you pull a CPU from its socket with the lever still locked in place, it weakens the pin retention mechanism, and probably weakens the contact with the CPU pins.

I wouldn`t make a mad dash out to get a different power supply with out doing as Duvie suggested first....
