Is my new RAM crashing me?

I just bought a new 256mb stick of RAM, PC133 making the total amount of RAM in my computer, 512mb.

I only have 3 DIMM slots so I have 2 individual 128mb PC133 sticks and 1 256mb PC133 stick. The chips on all 3 of the RAM sticks are made by a company named Infinieon.

My computer was working like a charm before installing a new RAM. I even formatted my comp a week ago too.

When installing the RAM, I had to take a cotton swab to clean this huge glob of dust stuck between the 3rd and only available DIMM slot. I didn't want to use a cotton swab because I *think* it may cause static electricity but my dad says a cotton swab doesn't cause static electricity.

So me and him cleaned out some dustballs stuck between the DIMM slots, between the fans of the CPU fan, etc.

I inserted the RAM. The clipholder on the left side of the DIMM slot would fit nicely with the RAM. However, it took alot of effort, time and pressure to get the right clipholder to fit into the arch on the side of the RAM. After about 10 minutes, the RAM finally fitted with the right clipholder.

I boot up, the BIOS pre-boot screen says 512mb of RAM is installed. I check under the SYSTEM menu in Control Panel and yep, it says 512mb of RAM too.

I launch up 3dmark2k1, I get a BSOD. I reboot and try Quake 3. Quake 3 at first, worked okay. But then as I launched it again, my screen turns black and there's 1 row of small green vertical lines going across the top of my screen.

Minutes later, I open Quake 2. Quake 2 crashed. I rebooted, started Quake 2 once again. My screen turns black and there's 1 row of small green vertical lines going across the top of my screen.

I'm thinking to myself...maybe my graphics card is overheating or something. I underclock my GF2. Same problems. I tried turning off the OPTIMAL setting in my BIOS. I tried turning off Fastwrites and SideBand Addressing. I even set my RAM back to CAS3 (it was on CAS2).

Nothing is working so far. It seems like after turning off all those settings, the crashes are less frequent but now, the "my screen turns black and there's 1 row of small green vertical lines going across the top of my screen" symptons happen every 1 of 3 times I launch either Quake 3 or Quake 2.

Can someone advise me on how to fix this? Thanks in advanced!!!

some people have had trouble if they fill all the dimm slots (trouble like your explaining) try taking out one of the 128mb sticks so you will have a total of 384mb and see if it still has problems

another thing not related, since you are using win98se 512mb of ram probably wont help you much, thats one of the big problems with win98, its not able to effectivly use lots of ram

I know Win98SE won't utilize all, or even close to 512mb of my RAM. But when using programs like Q3Radiant and Photoshop, things seem to process a bit faster. 🙁

I really want to try and have all 512mb of my RAM installed on my computer. 🙁

I'm using whatever BIOS that came with my mobo. I really don't want to screw up my mobo and pay $100 for a new one. 🙁

I think its like 1001D or something like that...

Bah crap, time to take out one stick. 🙁

What if taking out 1 of the 128 sticks doesn't work? What then? I mean I've disabled everything in the book from Fastwrites to lowering my ram from CAS2 to CAS3. 🙁

Intresting...

I lowered my AGP Apeture setting from 256mb to 128mb. Seems like all my crashes are gone...

I'm not 100% sure it was the AGP Aperture setting being too high. I enabled 2Ts (signifying CAS2) for my RAM. I haven't enabled Fastwrites, SBA or anything else that I disabled with the exception of the CAS3 to CAS2.

Not like Fastwrites, SBA, AGP 4x, etc...made much of a difference in games anyways.

Bahaha I did it. I enabled all those settings that I previously disabled. My system is still stable! Woohoo!

AGP Aperture kicks ass! 😀
