I bought a Pentium 3 (presario 2700) laptop from a friend today. It works fine but when I take away the AC power, the computer fails to turn on. THe battery shows 100%. When I use it and pull off the AC, the computer turns off instantly.

Is the battery broken? I have never owned a laptop before

My guess is that the battery is bad. A PIII computer is a few years old and if the battery is the original, it can't be any good.

Good Luck

Is it normal for the original battery to stop working after a few years. This was bought back in late 2002

Yea, definitely. Batteries have a limited lifespan. I wouldn't expect a 5 year old battery to work.

Yes - after about 3 years, laptop batteries are on borrowed time or life support. Replace the battery. As long as it runs on A/C power, the laptop is good.

I'd be more surprised by a laptop battery from 2002 that was working fine. Most of the ones i see coming in my store are only a couple years old and already dead.
