this maxtor i just in stalled is brand new. I formatted it. at 73% it slowed down very very slow and took forever to finish. i finally got windows installed on it and it seems that every once in a whilethe hard drive will slow down very slow for about 30 seconds. I installed the game far cry and went to play it (my first time playing a game on this new computer) and about 30 seconds into the game it crashed very badly.

whats wrong with it? this thing has been nothing but problems...

athlon 64 3000+
asus k8n-e
3gb kingston pc2700
ati radeon 9700pro
creative audigy zs 2 plat
maxtor 60gb sata
wd 120gb ide

Depends on how hard you dropped it on the floor...😛
Seriously though, have you secured all cables? Do you hear a grinding or odd buzzing sound? Does Windows even boot up now?

no im on the computer right now. it works most of the time. just every once in a while it gets all weird for a little bit. i also got this error while transferring some files from my sata to the ide drive "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

sounds like a bad hdd to me. Nice to see you have your priorities strait.. 3gb of ram and only a radeon 9700 pro 🙁 hmm.. never thought i'de say that, only a 9700 pro...

Yes, it's bad.

It was bad before it was made. Maxtor is junk.

I would consider if I was you getting a Seagate or ANY other brand for that matter.

I saw the thread title and already knew before I even entered, that the drive in question, was a Crapstor. cool. 😀

i bought 4 things when I ordered my new parts from newegg:

- case
- mobo
- ram
- cpu
- hdd

Things that dont work from that order and have been replaced or have to be replaced:

- cpu psu
- mobo
- hdd

What the hell...

Well I wouldn't recommend ANY brand... I've had some negative experiences with IBMs (Deathstars) and WD drives with the infamous "whining" problem... on the other hand Samsungs and Seagates have treated me well... the Seagates are really quite good, low noise, 5 year warranty.

so I guess ill be buying another HD tomorrow at best buy. thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it.

is it possible that a bad hdd would make my speakers have a random clicking/ticking sound whenever theyre on? ive tested the speakers, the receiver they plug into, and the optical cable coming out of my audigy zs2 plat.

somethings wrong somewhere in there...

ouch, bestbuy? can you say overpriced?

my new-found circuit city employee's discount brings local things down to a reasonable price 🙂

i'm not waiting for newegg to send me another. im just buy a new one and send the broken one back. my computer has been down for 4 days i dont care what I pay I just want to get it working.

i just did chkdsk and it said it cleared up some areas, but i went to play far cry and it crashed badly again.

isnt there some log you can check to see what happen last time your computer shutdown... like something that shows me what went wrong and made it crash?

I was just playing world of warcraft and it crashed... i got a little bit about the error that pops up (its too fast to really read). it says

'vpu recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer..."

what does that mean is wrong with my system? is that from the hd you think?

thank you

Is it a SATA drive? If so try another SATA port. Make sure you vid card is properly powered. I had a simular problem thinking it was my new HD but the video card had a bad molex and wasnt getting proper power.
