Is my new 80 Maxtor 8MB loud or am I just spoiled?

Got a new 80 gig maxtor w/8MB cache to replace my 40gig fluid bearing drive (Maxtor)

Am I just used to the 40gig being so quiet or is this thing really that noisy?

What model number (I think there is only one, but???) My 80 gig Maxtor HAS fluid bearings, and is VERY quiet. (and fast!) 6Y080P0 is my model number. You can only hear a faint sound when you are really thrashing it.

Yep thats the same model number I have.

I don't know it just seems like it thrashes more than my 40 gig. Thats the FIRST thing I noticed right off the bat.

It seems fast. I haven't really tested it but it really makes the noise opening heavy duty programs like MS Money, Winamp3, and Netscape.

i just bought a new maxtor 80gig 8mb cache this weekend and i too have noticed the noise it makes when running some applications.... I checked for errors with the utility they give on maxtor.com and found none so i am hoping that the drive will last awhile and if not i hope it isn't longer than a year.....but i can deal with the noise for the performace that it puts out.....much better than the ole 5400rpm

Aww crap... I've been using a Seagate Cuda IV and bought a Maxtor 80GB 8MB cache (Lsomething model) for about $40 after rebates in the hopes of getting a quiet drive. Haven't tried it out yet (waiting for controller card) but hopefully its quiet...

I've built a few systems with the newer Maxtors, and found them quiet and fast.

Comparing to WD JB 120GB, the Maxtor disks I'm also using ( 120GB and 80GB ) are a little bit annoying due to the noise.
They're much quieter than my IBM Ultrastar though.

Yeah the 80GB Maxtor 8MB hard drive i just got is fairly loud, much more so then my 40gb ibm deckstar. I think its normal.

I know this sounds crazy but I swear that once I installed SP3 for Win2k it got quieter. For whatever reason I have no idea. I installed it overnight and when I rebooted in the morning I kept thinking this thing seems quieter.

Am I crazy?

I had a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120 gig HD with 8 mb of cache and a 3 year warranty. It was pretty loud at times. I brought it back though after i got my WD 1200 JB with 8 mb of cache and a 3 year warranty for a really low price! For some reason the WD 1200JB 8 mb of cache HD in my opinion is quicker but maybe i haven't used it enough tell yet. So far it seems just as fast as the Maxtor if not maybe faster. Hard to say. I did make sure it was a two 60 gig platter WD 120JB HD though. WD was so smart to start making their Hard drive packages clear so you can see the model number, LBA number, etc right on the drive without even opening it up! Finally a hard drive company trying to please everyone! Now i can always be picky and look at each hard drive in the store LBA, model number, etc before i buy it to make sure its the exact one i want!

Yeah, my Maxtor drive is noticably louder than my Western Digital drive. But its an older 40gb Maxtor drive, so I don't know if that counts.

I just picked up the WD 120JB HD and wondered how you can verify that is has the 2 60gig platters? Do the numbers you mentioned indicate this?

I found the Seagate Barracuda V (parallel 8 MB, 120 GB) far too loud (and much louder than my IV), until I turned on acoustic management. This is in a Quiet PC.

HarryManback well i didn't really check how good the source was but i found it out at www.newegg.com in the comments part of the WD1200JB HD that i was reading before i bought it for a really cheap price!

The way you can find out if it is the three 40 gig platter WD1200JB Hard drive or two 60 gig platter WD1200JB Hard drive is by the LBA number!

LBA # 234375000 is the three 40 gig platter WD1200JB Hard drive

LBA # 234441648 is the two 60 gig platter WD1200JB Hard drive

I made sure i got the two 60 gig platter one. I was checking all of the WD1200JBs just to make sure. They all had the two 60 gig platter one but i only had to check three.

Hey there, is there a similar acoustic management utility for Maxtor drives? I've been using this drive for a couple of days now, and I have to say its much quieter than my grind-n-whine old 13GB WD Caviar drive. But still not anywhere close to my Cuda IV in quietness although its a noticeably quicker in loading applications.

I believe so. Just check their site. The price you pay however is lower performance. For my Quiet PC, the quietness far outweighs the lower performance.
